1.Brief description and aims of module
This blended learning module is designed for teachers, SENCos and other professionals working with children and young people on the autism spectrum.
The aims of the module are to:
- Increase your knowledge and understanding of the autism spectrum.
- To begin to understand the triad of differences (and subsequent DSM-V) and related implications for the individual.
- To recognise the range of diversity within the autism spectrum.
- To consider the range of provision, interventions, strategies and support for children and young people on the autism spectrum.
- To begin to evaluate provision and consider its appropriateness.
- To consider the range of provision and support needed by children and their families.
2.Outline syllabus
Understanding Autism Spectrum Conditions
- To understand the triad of impairments (and subsequent DSM – V criteria) and related issues regarding diagnosis.
- To begin understand the nature of the autism spectrum in relation to differing cognitive and medical models.
Supporting children and young people on the autism spectrum
- To understand varying educational approaches and interventions to supporting children and young people on the autism spectrum
- To critically explore and evaluate whole school and class based approaches.
- To critically evaluate research in relation to working in effective partnerships with outside agencies and families.
- To explore and understand ethical issues regarding supporting and working with children and young people on the autism spectrum
3.Teaching and learning activities
This module is delivered through blended learning. Teaching methods comprise of face to face and online teaching sessions, workshops and tutorials.
