1.Brief description and aims of module
RATIONALE – To give students an understanding of the structure of the industry in all its variety, and of how to make their way in it.
DESCRIPTION – Students learn to pitch and to talk flexibly and intelligently about their own work.
2.Outline syllabus
One continuing tutor chairs all sessions. Each day a visiting professional from a different medium comes in and gives students a short introduction to how to find work and develop a career in the industry. The professionals will be working producers, script editors, directors, and agents. Students then give a prepared pitch to the visiting professional, and develop the pitch under pressure. Afterwards, the visiting professional, tutor and fellow students discuss the pitch.
Every student will have to prepare a pitch for each of stage, radio, television or film. Students also research the workings and demands of one part of the industry. Where possible, they will also spend some time in placement in a script unit, rehearsal room, or other appropriate professional setting.
3.Teaching and learning activities
Students attend three intensive weekend workshops. Each workshop lasts from 10.30 – 5.
Each day will begin with the continuing tutor working with the students to discuss their different pieces of research into particular parts of the industry. Then the visiting professional, tutor, and students will work through the student pitches.
Students will again practice their skills in giving and responding to constructive criticism.
