1.Brief description and aims of module

This module builds on the experience of the writing workshop in Semester 1 – developing the language and skills of group interaction, close and constructive reading of work-in-progress, and redrafting of work in response to group and tutorial feedback. You choose your area of specialism and pursue one or more longer pieces of writing for young people.

2.Outline syllabus

The emphasis will be on you choosing an area of specialism in your writing for young people, and pursuing one or more pieces of substantial work in it. This is likely to relate to the material being assembled towards the Manuscript; this module can also be used to explore additional writing projects and ideas.

Increasingly you will be setting your own individual goals and organising your work, though with the tutor’s guidance and the group’s informed feedback, and developing a professional perspective on your writing. You will continue to read as a writer, to support and extend your own writing. You will reflect on your writing and re-drafting process.

3.Teaching and learning activities

• You will attend seminar-workshop for three hours each week.
• You will be expected to write and redraft creative writing; either self-starting pieces or assignments set by the tutor, and bring your drafts for critical attention in the group.
• You will be encouraged to develop your reading outside class times and come prepared to participate in workshop sessions.
• You will practise and extend your skills in giving and responding to constructive criticism of creative work.

• Assessment Type: Course Work
• Description: A folder of up to 2,500 words, plus 500 words of reflective commentary
• % Weighting: 50%

• Assessment Type: Course Work
• Description: Up to 5000 words of Work-in-Progress, plus 500 words of reflective commentary
• % Weighting: 50%
