1.Brief description and aims of module
Ceramics 2 is the second studio and workshop-based module of the course, and builds on knowledge and skills developed in both Ceramics 1 (CE7012) and Research Methodologies (AR7001). You are encouraged to maintain an experimental approach to production while further defining and refining an individually negotiated proposal of self-directed study.
Having established your chosen modes of production, the module aims to build your technical skills and knowledge of relevant ceramic materials and processes. Emphasis is placed on documentation of process, as part of a reflective process, through photography, moving image, drawing and/or writing. You are encouraged to develop thinking through making and to develop theory interests out of discoveries and problems generated by practice.
2.Outline syllabus
The module is taught through individual and group tutorials and critiques in studio and/or workshop spaces; technical support is provided in specialist workshop areas. You will have access to talks and interactive workshops with BSAD staff and visiting professionals, but at this stage of the course a greater emphasis is put on self-directed learning. You will both learn and share concepts, methods and contemporary thinking in tutorials and critiques, with peers and tutors. Lines of enquiry will be explored and challenged, supporting you to plan and implement tasks autonomously, but you may still have mini-briefs suggested from time to time, to help you to set limits for yourself.
At the end of the module, you will mount a group exhibition outside the studio space. You will be required to give careful consideration to site / audience, communicating a rationale for the exhibition that is appropriate to the intentions underpinning your work. You are expected to work together, as a peer group, to make this exhibition a success, but you will also receive academic and technical support.
Further guidance and support is provided via the Minerva VLE system.
