1.Brief description and aims of module
Ceramics 1 is a studio and workshop-based module that allows you to reflect on past practice and to begin to negotiate a learning programme that will lead to an individual strategy for practice. The module begins with a live brief that allows you to explore material qualities and the construction of meaning in the contexts of both the production facilities available in the School and an off-site exhibition.
The module aims to foster an imaginative and experimental approach to production through speculative and systematic material investigation. This investigation will be aided by the application of practice-based research methods explored in the Research Methods module. You will also develop your knowledge of relevant ceramic materials and processes and the technical skills appropriate for your chosen modes of production.
2.Outline syllabus
The module is taught through individual and group tutorials and critiques in studio and/or workshop spaces; technical support is provided in specialist workshop areas. A series of talks and interactive workshops with BSAD staff and visiting professionals gives you the opportunity to gain new knowledge and experience and to reflect on existing knowledge.
Further guidance and support is provided via the Minerva VLE system.
You will both learn and share concepts, methods and contemporary thinking in tutorials and critiques, with peers and tutors. Lines of enquiry will be explored and challenged, supporting you to plan and implement tasks autonomously. You will be encouraged to research ceramic practice that is relevant to your interests and to set limits for yourself, in the development of an individual project. For the live brief, you will produce written and ceramic work inspired by an aspect of the partner institution (site, collection, object) and mount and promote a group exhibition.
Throughout the module, you will be encouraged to reflect on your practice through journal writing and to develop language that allows you to think and to communicate an engagement with material. This reflection will form the basis of a position statement that outlines future intentions for the Ceramics 2 module.
