1.Brief description and aims of module
Analysis of Contemporary Context is a theory-based module that introduces you to a broad variety of approaches to contemporary practice in Ceramics and to the debates that surround them. The module builds on knowledge gained from Research Methodologies (AR7001) and the practice-based learning of Ceramics 1 (CE7012), helping you to understand the context within which your individual strategy for practice will be applied. You will be encouraged to develop the critical language and research and writing skills that will enable you to become reflexive practitioners who contribute to the shaping of the discipline of Ceramics.
2.Outline syllabus
Throughout this module you will be encouraged to ask the questions “what is Ceramics?” and “what is a discipline?” and to explore how the contemporary is rooted in the historical. You will be introduced to the dialogue that makes the discipline through a series of lecture / seminars, delivered by a range of high-level practitioners and theorists associated with the school. Approaches to ceramic production and professional practice that sit within the wider fields of art, craft and design will be explored. You will also deepen your knowledge of the field through study trips and your writing and presentational skills will be developed through interactive workshops. Particular emphasis will be placed on how meaning is created at sites of production and sites of audiencing - you will be encouraged to explore questions of facture, alongside your rationale for production and your understanding of the constituency you hope to address through your practice.
