1.Brief description and aims of module
This module provides you with an introduction to the principles and practices of research in the social sciences, offering you a solid foundation upon which to design, propose and implement a research project. It introduces a range of practical, qualitative and quantitative methodologies and methods from which you can select the most appropriate for your 60 credit ‘capstone’ module (dissertation, consultancy project, extended project, etc.).
2.Outline syllabus
The module offers an introduction to research methodology and design, as well as practical guidance on how to develop, manage and successfully complete a major research project. Topics include:
Creating and clarifying the research topic
What is a ‘literature review’?
Research methodologies
Designing a research project
Access and research ethics
Primary and secondary data/evidence
Data analysis
Critical evaluation
Writing and presenting the research project
3.Teaching and learning activities
This module is delivered through a combination of discussion based seminars and practical workshops.
