Glitter Jar Mindful Moment

An activity we have done in guidance class and a tool in some of the calm corners are glitter jars. The glitter in the jar represents your thoughts and feelings. When the glitter is swirling around in the jar it represents your mind when you have strong feelings or lots of thoughts in your head. Strong feelings and too many thoughts at once can create stress in your body and shallow quick breathing. It’s hard to focus. You may react quickly or say something without thinking. It's easy to start blaming and judging yourself or others. You might even start feeling tension in your body.Use the video below and practice to see what happens to your mind and body when you sit quietly for a minute and breatheslowly, inhaling and exhaling through your nose. If a new thought comes to your mind and you notice it, simply go back to focusing on your breathing. Watch the glitter in the jar, it will start to slow down and calmly fall to the bottom.The water in the jar becomes clearer as the glitter rests at the bottom of the jar. Notice if there is a change in your body and in your mind. This is a great daily practice to train your brain, just like exercising trains your muscles!
