From Mr Craig Thomas, Headteacher
As we approach the final term of the academic year, exam season is now in full swing. I want to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt good luck to all our students revising and sitting their GCSEs, A Levels and BTECs —you’re doing a fantastic job, and we’re really proud of the determination, resilience and focus you’re showing. Keep going!
Today also marks a significant moment as we begin to say farewell to our wonderful Year 13 students. Following their Leavers’ Day celebrations earlier this month, we’re looking forward to the Sixth Form Leavers’ Dinner at St. Hilda's College later today—a chance to celebrate all they’ve achieved and to wish them well for the exciting journeys ahead. They leave us not only with impressive academic accomplishments, but as thoughtful, confident individuals who have contributed so much to our school community.
It’s been a year since our Ofsted inspection, and while we were delighted to be rated Outstanding, we are not complacent. Our focus remains firmly on continual improvement—strengthening our provision, deepening our curriculum, and ensuring every student can thrive. It was particularly pleasing this term to receive recognition from the Schools, Students and Teachers Network (SSAT), with certificates awarded for student attainment and progress placing us in the top 10% of schools nationally—testament to the commitment of both staff and students.
Beyond the classroom, it’s been wonderful to see students taking part in a wide range of extracurricular opportunities and many PE fixtures this term. From cricket and rounders to football, our teams have represented the school with real energy, team spirit and pride. Thank you to all those who take part and to the staff who make it all possible.
As always, thank you for your continued support and I wish you an enjoyable week off!
From Dr Lucy Dickinson, Chair of Governors
As we approach spring half term, along with enjoying the sunny weather, we also recognise the benefits of students being able to use the school’s outdoor space to unwind, socialise and exercise between lessons and exams. Governors visited the school last week and were happy to see so many students looking relaxed and confident during examination season. We also had time to talk to staff about the ongoing support for those who are struggling with pressure, and we thank everyone involved in providing bespoke care for those needing it. Our drop-ins to a wide range of classes, including a wide variety of subjects and year groups, were very positive. Governors who had also visited earlier in the year noted that interactions between students and staff had grown even stronger, with clear evidence of learning being optimised.
We also recently attended the AGM of the newly relaunched Parent Teacher Association (now 'Friends of Bartholomew School') and were excited to be able to share ideas about community engagement and fundraising to further develop the outdoor areas and resources. Many thanks to all those parents and staff who have supported the school in this way over the years, as well as to the new team, and we look forward to more events and opportunities to work together in the future.
Our Governing Body meeting this term included a visit from representatives of the new School Council team which has been expanded to include greater interaction between year groups and more potential for progression for those joining the student leadership team lower down the school. Again, we thank those who put themselves forwards for these roles and recognise the huge value of dedicated student leadership and mentoring. We were also grateful to hear their thoughts about the most important areas for development and will be mindful of these suggestions. Governors will now have input into the School Development Plan for the forthcoming year and will also be reviewing results of the parent and SEND survey when available – please do complete this when it is sent out.
We discussed the ongoing work with the feeder primary schools regarding supporting students to be ready for the expectations at Bartholomew and to ensure that they have a smooth transition to secondary school. We wish these students an enjoyable time at the upcoming visit days.
Finally, we joined in celebrating and congratulating the school and staff on their recent recognition awards for placing in the top 10% of schools nationally for student progress and the top 10% of non-selective schools for student attainment. We also said thank you and farewell to Janine Broome, whose term as parent governor finishes soon – there will be a parent governor election at the start of the new academic year.
Meanwhile we wish the Year 11 and 13 students the very best for their exams and all students an enjoyable and exciting summer term.
From Ms Guy, Art Department
Thank you to everyone who voted in the Art Bytes public vote for their favourite Surrealist artwork from the three shortlisted student finalists: Abigail, 9T, Ariella, 9W, and Gordon, 9R, whose work is shown below.
We are delighted to share that Abigail's artwork won the public vote and a place in Art Bytes virtual gallery exhibition, as well as going forward for regional, and possibly national, award consideration by the Art Bytes esteemed judging panel. A copy of Abigail's work will also be exhibited at the South East Celebration Event at Hastings Contemporary Studio. Following that, her work will be exhibited at the Oxford City College Exhibition.
Huge congratulations to all students who submitted work this year, we are really proud of you all!
Congratulations to Abigail in 9T, who is celebrating two fantastic achievements in Art. Her Surrealist drawing was voted best in the Art Bytes competition and will be exhibited at a special gallery showcase in Hastings, followed by a showing in Oxford. On top of this, Abigail’s vibrant design has been chosen as the winning artwork for this year’s Eynsham Carnival. She was congratulated by Headteacher Mr Thomas (pictured) and her framed work goes on public display soon —an impressive double win!

We are delighted to share the news that Year 12 student, Astrid B, has received a Commendation in the French Level 4 competition. Massive congratulations to Astrid.
The Translation Exchange launched the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators in 2020. The competition is inspired by the life and work of the great translator Anthea Bell and aims to promote language learning across the UK and to inspire creativity in the classroom. By providing teachers with the tools they need to bring translation to life, the goal is to motivate more students to study modern foreign languages throughout their time at school and beyond.

Mrs Clements-Foster, Head of Physical Education
It's been a really busy and fun term with lots of fixtures, sporting events and celebratory successes. Cricket and rounders have been added to the fixtures calendar and we've been lucky to have such great weather. It's been great to offer students in Year 9 the opportunity to learn sailing at Farmoor Reservoir and we've been just a little bit envious to see the photos (see below - what more could you want on a hot day than to be on the water?!).
We are so proud of our students who have thrown themselves into every opportunity and enjoyed being outdoors and active. The Year 9 Sports Leaders have been amazing, helping out with lots of events and showing real positivity and leadership. Thank you to them all.
If any students want to get involved or try something new in Term 6 check the extracurricular timetable on the school website and Google Classroom.
Mrs Clements-Foster, Head of Physical Education
Congratulations to our Year 8 girls' football team who are the Girls' Football Schools Partnership champions, winning their match on Thursday 22nd May. What a fantastic achievement - well done!
From Mr Humm, PE Department
In a truly remarkable performance, Year 7 student, Freddie, scored an unbeaten 100 runs (retiring after reaching the milestone) in Bartholomew School’s U13 cricket league victory over Wood Green School earlier this month. This exceptional achievement is a rare sight in school cricket, where matches are typically limited to 20 overs or less.
Between them, the PE staff have over three decades of experience at Bartholomew, and they can count on one hand the number of school cricket centuries they've witnessed—making Freddie’s century all the more special, especially for a Year 7 student! Freya from Year 8 also impressed with a strong contribution of 34 not out - well done!
The team photo captures the spirit of the day—please do join us in congratulating these young cricketers on a superb start to the season!
From Miss Walton, PE Department
A lucky group of 14 Year 9 students have been making the most of the glorious spring weather by taking to the water at Farmoor Reservoir for an eight-week course of after-school sailing lessons. Led by trained instructors from the Oxford Sailing Trust, the sessions offer students the chance to learn the basics of sailing in a fun and supportive environment—no previous experience required!
Thanks to the sailing club’s generous outreach programme, the course is completely free of charge, and our students have been throwing themselves into the challenge with great enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing how their skills develop over the coming weeks—watch this space for more updates!
From Mr Connaughton, PE Department
A group of Year 9 students recently represented Bartholomew School at the National T1 Rugby Series, held at Henley Hawks RFU. This innovative, non-contact format of rugby encourages inclusivity and teamwork, with mixed-gender teams and plenty of opportunities to develop core rugby skills in a safe and supportive environment.
The Bartholomew squad embraced the spirit of the event, showing great teamwork, energy, and enthusiasm throughout the day. One of our teams—Portugal—won their group, with standout performances from Aurora and Rosa, who were awarded medals for their efforts!
A huge well done to all the students who took part and represented the school with pride.
From Miss Walton, PE Department
Thanks to our Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 teams who have shown commitment and enthusiasm in this term's rounders matches. We look forward to more fixtures in Term 6!
From Miss Walton, PE Department
The sports leaders have worked really hard in their lessons since September to make their events successful. It has been fantastic to see how much their confidence and skills set have developed over that time. They get a huge amount out of working with the younger children in the partnership, it really is great to see.
We use a ‘yellow bag’ scheme at Bartholomew School. Yellow bags are located around the school site and students may help themselves to disposable menstruation pads when required.
Students can also speak to Reception or another member of staff if they require more substantial supplies to have at home, for example for the holidays.
Through this Department for Education (DfE) funding, we are also able to offer students the chance to try out reusable period underwear. Look out for the link on Google Classroom from Mrs Humm in Term 6 if you'd like to sample these (if demand is high, we will place an order in September when the new DfE funding is allocated).
If you have any questions about accessing menstruation products, please email Mrs Humm via the School Office.
If you have any questions about the Yellow Bag scheme or menstruation products available through school, please email Mrs Humm, Head of Learning for Life, via the School Office.
From Mrs Miller, Librarian
Students in the Year 8 Book Group have enjoyed reading and voting for their favourite book from The Oxfordshire Book Awards 2025 shortlist. The most popular book with our students was All the Hidden Monsters by Amie Jordan. The overall winner voted by schools across Oxfordshire was Catch Your Death by Ravina Guron. The Awards Ceremony will take place at Magdalen College School in November.
Mr Atkinson, School Council Senior Leader
Bartholomew School’s Student Council and Ambassadors have had an impactful year so far, driving student voice and leadership across our community. With 14 councillors and 23 ambassadors representing all year groups, and an elected Chair, Communications Lead and Clerk, their work spans key areas such as mental health, sustainability, fundraising, and school spirit. Recent highlights include the successful ‘Friendship Bench’ fundraiser, which raised £1,470 through a non-uniform day and seed giveaway—exceeding the project goal and paving the way for future initiatives. Upcoming plans are equally ambitious, including a fresh look at the House and rewards system, and looking at possibilities to enhance 'outdoor culture', such as fundraising initiatives for an outdoor gym. Our student leaders continue to show how collaboration, creativity, and care can shape a more inclusive and vibrant school environment.
From Monday 28th April to Friday 2nd May 2025, the majority of our Year 10 students took part in work experience placements across a wide range of industries. On their return to school, students reflected on their experiences through discussion, evaluation questionnaires, and by writing letters of thanks to their employers.
This year, 204 students participated in placements, gaining valuable insight into the world of work. The top five sectors were: Engineering (15%), Teaching (14%), Business & Administration (11%), Animal Care (9%), and Leisure, Sport & Tourism (7%).
Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 91% rating their placement as very good or good, and many highlighting how much they enjoyed gaining hands-on experience in a real-world setting.
Employers also provided glowing feedback, praising students for their hard work, reliability, and enthusiasm.
A huge thank you to all the employers who generously offered placements and helped make this opportunity so meaningful. And well done to our Year 10 students, who represented Bartholomew School with maturity and professionalism throughout the week!
The week of Monday 7th to Friday 11th July 2025 has been set aside for Year 12 to do a period of work experience. A number of students have successfully managed to arrange their own placements and handed in the required paperwork. The necessary health and safety checks are now under way. The deadline for providing school with details has now passed and anyone who has arranged a placement, but not handed in the details, should speak to Mrs Williams urgently.
Our Careers Adviser Maggie Nason has been meeting Year 11, 12 and 13 students in school this term for face-to-face careers advice and guidance. Maggie can offer impartial information, advice and guidance, and can help with applying for jobs, apprenticeships, college courses, training, or university. Any students in Year 11 or the Sixth Form who would like to make an appointment, particularly any unsure of their plans for September, should email Mrs Williams.
We were delighted to be invited by the Eynsham Carnival Committee to contribute designs for this year’s Carnival programme cover. A group of talented students from KS3 Art Club and our team of Art Ambassadors enthusiastically took up the challenge, producing four thoughtful and creative entries.
Congratulations to Vincent (8H), Ella (8H), Dora (8H), and Abigail (9T) for their excellent work—and a special well done to Abigail, whose design was selected by the committee for this year’s official cover! Her artwork will soon be appearing on Carnival publicity across the local area, and will also be featured—along with the other entries—inside the printed programme.
This project was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our students’ creativity while fostering strong community links. Our thanks go to the Carnival Committee for involving us, and we look forward to seeing the finished programmes around Eynsham this summer.
We’re getting ready to announce the launch of our brand-new alumni platform in partnership with Future First, going live in Term 6.
Future First is a national leader in helping schools build thriving alumni networks, and this new platform will make it easier than ever for former students to reconnect, share their stories, and support the next generation at Bartholomew. Whether you're keen to mentor current students, attend events, or simply stay in touch, we’d love you to join us.
You can also stay connected via LinkedIn - just add Bartholomew School and you'll be able to find other alumni to grow your network.
From the Friends of Bartholomew School
The school Parent Teacher Association group held its Annual General Meeting in April, where the newly elected committee announced a new name: Friends of Bartholomew School (FOBS). The change reflects the group’s hope of broadening membership beyond just parents and carers to include the wider community.
Mr Thomas attended, along with the new teacher liaison, Mr Wood, and Lucy Dickinson and Daryl Back from the Board of Governors. Attendees heard first-hand about the school’s priorities for the upcoming academic year and took part in a productive discussion about where FOBS can best focus its fundraising efforts.
It was agreed that next year’s fundraising will support improvements to the school’s outdoor spaces, making them more enjoyable and functional for students.
The committee will return next term with more news about how you can get involved and details on the launch of a new '500 Club', where you can be in with a chance of winning a cash prize each month!
For news and updates, please follow our new Facebook page Friends of Bartholomew School (Eynsham).
