From Mr Craig Thomas, Headteacher
Welcome to our new look 'Bartholomew Bulletin', a round up and reflection of the news and highlights from this term. I hope that reading this newsletter gives you a flavour of life at the School. I am sure you will join me in feeling proud to celebrate all the activities and events that have taken place.
Over the summer we were delighted with the outcomes achieved by our students. This was testament to a lot of hard work and commitment by students, families and staff.
We welcomed many new students to Bartholomew School in September and we hope everyone has had an enjoyable, productive first term and settled in well.
It has been a busy extracurricular term with, perhaps most notably, our two big oversees residentials: the MFL trip to Paris and GCSE History trip to Berlin. As ever, our students were excellent ambassadors of the school.
In Term 2 our Year 11 students will begin their mock examinations. The excellent attendance at this week's Success Fayre shows that they are ready for the challenge and we wish them all luck in their preparations.
I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and support and hope that you all enjoy a well-deserved rest in the break.
We look forward to seeing staff and students back in school on Monday 4th November.
From Dr Lucy Dickinson, Chair of Governors
Governors would like to welcome our new Year 7s along with their families, and anyone else who has joined our school community this term. We have been delighted to see an increasing number of exciting trips and events taking place, including those of history students to Berlin and geographers to Wales, and we thank the staff members who went along for their part in offering students these opportunities.
At our first meetings of the academic year, we were pleased to discuss the excellent GCSE and A Level results, and we congratulate students, and their teachers, for these fantastic outcomes. We also heard about the varied and inspiring range of pathways taken by those who left the school at the end of the summer. Governors are keen to help support the extensive careers program which takes place across the school, and some Governors talked to Year 8 students about career opportunities and asked them to guess their jobs in the Careers Detectives event.
Governors have also been visiting school to get a sense of the range of activities and subjects on offer. The Year 13 students presented their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) work in a fascinating variety of topics and Governors came along to the Year 6 Open Evening and some of the parent information evenings. Alongside the strong academic performance, the school continues to offer a range of sporting and other extracurricular activities, with cohorts starting their Duke of Edinburgh journeys. Do encourage your young people to get involved, and remember that if there are financial constraints to participation, the school is always looking to support as many students as possible to take part.
We have seen an increase in the number of students joining the Sixth Form and in the coming months we will be looking at how best to use the space and resources available. Our Sixth Form students are brilliant mentors for the younger students, and we are keen to see them supported both academically and socially. The EPA Trust also had its annual strategy meeting earlier this week and we continue to work with Trustees and Governors from the other Trust schools to give the best school experience to all the children and young people attending our schools.
Our Year 13 Geography students enjoyed a highly successful field trip to Oxwich Bay on the Gower Peninsula, Wales, which took place from Monday 2nd October to Thursday 5th October 2024. This four-day adventure formed an important part of the A Level Geography course, as their NEA (Non-Examined Assessment), which accounts for 20% of their final grade.
The trip involved exploring diverse environments, from studying succession at Oxwich Bay’s sand dunes to urban micro climate studies in the city of Swansea. Students collected valuable primary data, tailored to their individual research questions, and this hands-on experience directly contributed to their NEA projects. Led by our Geography staff, Mr Watkins, Mrs Furse, and Mr Clapton, the students engaged a wide range of fieldwork activities, all while gaining a deeper understanding of the geographical processes at play in these varied landscapes.
In addition to gathering crucial data, the trip provided an opportunity for students to build skills in independent investigation and data analysis, which will also be beneficial in their upcoming exams. Despite some typically unpredictable British weather, the students were well-prepared with their waterproofs and sturdy boots, ensuring the trip was both productive and enjoyable.
We had a fantastic Year 11 History trip to Berlin, with four extremely busy days, criss-crossing the city, taking in the sights and getting a real sense of the history of the city.
Berlin is at the very centre of much of the 20th Century European history and we spent time at many of the sights associated with the rise of Nazism in the 1930s, the eventual fall of Berlin at the end of the Second World War, the new order established by the Allied powers in 1945, life in East Berlin during the communist era and finally the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
From the sobering visit to the former concentration camp at Sachsenhausen to the uplifting modern art adorning a remaining section of the wall at the East Side Gallery, the trip encompassed a huge range of impactful experiences that caused students and staff alike reflect on Berlin's past and the impact that this had on millions of people across the last century.
Our GCSE and A Level students had a very successful trip to Paris. We visited many places over four days, including Vimy, Montmartre, Les Invalides, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Élysées, Seine river cruise, Tour Eiffel, Notre Dame, Quartier Latin, Centre Pompidou, Le Louvre and not forgetting Parc Asterix.
Fun was had by all and we made many long-lasting memories.
Bravo la classe de Paris 2024!!
Every year when October rolls around, the Bartholomew maths department run the Senior Maths Challenge, a multiple choice, 90-minute maths paper, designed to test the problem-solving skills of our Year 11, 12, and 13 students. These are run by the UK Maths Trust (UKMT) and are held internationally across secondary schools. The top-scoring 66% of participants are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates in the ratio 3:2:1. This year, we had 89 students who chose to take part in the challenge, with 31 students achieving Bronze, 25 achieving Silver, and 8 achieving Gold.
A special congratulations go to Hannah B, Arthur F, Freddy W, and Tom W for achieving the joint highest score in Year 11, and to Ethan C, Roan E, Sophie F, Imogen P, Daniel A, Eddie B, Enes G, and Alexander W for getting through to the next round after the Senior Maths Challenge, the Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo, which will take place on Wednesday 20th November.
For those who are curious, Andrew Jobbings was a major contributor to the UKMT, and the following round is called the Kangaroo to acknowledge the contribution made by Australia to establishing large-scale mathematics contests.
On Tuesday 15th October, Ms Shao and I led our Year 11 Statistics group to Bletchley Park, the once top-secret home of allied code breaking in World War 2. It was here that Alan Turing and others used statistics to develop methods to crack the Enigma and Lorenz codes and decipher enemy communications.
Students were given a guided tour of the grounds, visiting the manor and huts where vital codebreaking work took place. We also had time to explore on our own which enabled us to experience many of the fascinating interactive exhibits. Between lively conversations about what they would do with the grounds if it were their house, the students really did appreciate the magnitude of the work which had to be undertaken during the war.
After fuelling up for lunch (in the wrong place as it happened - we stole another school's dining area), we attended a workshop on breaking the Lorenz cipher machine (a lesser known but much more advanced machine used by German high command to send messages to high ranking staff). Ms Shao and the students did a cracking job on deciphering the code... pun intended! As a reward, they all got a chance to play with the actual Enigma machine used in the film, 'The Imitation Game'. They were told that Benedict Cumberbatch had typed on those very buttons but most were more curious whether Kiera Knightly had.
The students were a credit to our school and asked brilliant questions throughout the day. We would thoroughly recommend visiting to anyone who has never been.
From Ms Smerald, Head of MFL
On Thursday 21st September the Languages Department held a fantastic 'Bake Off' event, which took place during our Open Evening as part of their early celebrations of European Day of Languages. We welcomed almost 1000 visitors and Year 6 families were invited to join in the fun by voting for their favourite bakes.
We were really impressed by the creativity and culinary skills of all our talented entrants, who baked up a storm with delicious creations inspired by the theme, 'Countries of the World'.
Congratulations to all students who took part and to our winners:
🥇 1st place - Audrey, Year 8 (China)
🥈 2nd place - Beatrice B and Bella C, Year 8 (Canada)
🥉 3rd place - Abigail C, Year 9, Matilda C, Year 8, and Selina A, Year 9 (England)
From Mrs Almgill, Head of Music
On the last Wednesday of Term 1 the school was treated to a fantastic music concert by our talented Year 7 students. The concert showcased a wide range of musical styles, from soulful spirituals to upbeat pop hits.
The Year 7 singers warmed our hearts with their beautiful voices, performing a selection of spirituals, as well as "Don't Worry" and the iconic "Circle of Life" from The Lion King. They brought the house down with a rousing rendition of "Can't Buy Me Love" by the Beatles.
We were also amazed by the solo performances of several brave Year 7 students. Skye wowed us with her rendition of "Naughty Girl" from Matilda, while Rhys's drum solo of "Back in Black" was nothing short of electrifying. Cadence's violin solo was simply breathtaking.
In addition to the individual performances, we were delighted to hear the string group, jazz band, and musical theatre group.
The PTA did a fantastic job providing refreshments for the concert, ensuring that everyone had a chance to relax and enjoy the music.
A huge thank you to all of the Year 7 students and their music teachers for putting on such a wonderful concert. We can't wait to see what they achieve in the years to come!
Year 7 students will continue discussing Body Image, completing the ‘Confident Me’ series of lessons. They will then explore aspects of Being Healthy, including diet, exercise and caffeine. More information about the L4L curriculum can be found on the school website: L4L pageWe operate a ‘yellow bag’ scheme at Bartholomew School whereby students can help themselves to disposable menstruation pads as required. Yellow bags are located around the school site for students to help themselves and they may also go to reception or speak to another member of staff if they require more substantial supplies to have at home.
As part of this DfE funding, we are also able to offer students the chance to try out reusable period underwear.
If you have any questions about accessing menstruation products, please email Mrs Humm, Head of Learning for Life, via the School Office
One of the highlights in the Year 13 calendar is the EPQ Marketplace, which took place on Tuesday 15th October. Parents and carers were also invited to join us along with Year 11s in a slightly different format for this year and it was lovely to see so much support and see the students in action explaining their projects so confidently and answering questions.
Students who have taken the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), involving an in-depth research project on a topic of their choice, are required to present to an assessor and group of peers or staff as part of their final mark, and we congratulate all students who achieved this.
The EPQ event is always a wonderful celebration of students' hard work and the range of topics explored was fascinating to see! We hope those Year 11 students who came along gained some inspiration for when it's their turn!
Each year students are given the opportunity to apply for the position of Library Ambassador. The role of a Library Ambassador involves Library Ambassadors help to process new stock, design bookmarks, shelve books and are instrumental in planning and running reading challenges.
This year a group of 20 students from Years 8 to 11 have been appointed and will be helping in the library on a rota basis at break and lunchtimes, promoting the library across the school and suggesting new ideas and initiatives to be run in the library.
In July 2024, three students from Bartholomew School took part in the National Kayaking Competition and made a significant impact. Knoah A (Year 8), Sam D (Year 10) and Koen A (Year 12), pictured here, competed in the Open Senior and Junior National Sprints Kayak Championships Regatta at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. They were well prepared for the event and achieved notable success.
Knoah competed in the Intermediate races where he came 2nd in the Final of the 500 meters K1, 5th in the final 500m K2 and 6th in the final of the 200m K2.
Sam competed in the under 16 races, coming 1st in the final of the 500m K4, 3rd in the final A of the 1000m K1, 4th in the final A of the 500m K1, 5th in the final of the 500m K2 and 6th in the final A of the 200m K1. This has been Sam’s most successful year in the competition, which paves way for his promotion to the Boys A team
And finally, Koen competed in his last junior year in kayaking in the under 18’s. Koen came first in the final of the 500m K4, 2nd in the final A of the 500m K1, 3rd in the final of the 500m K2, and 4th in the final A of the 200m K1.
All three competed at the National Sprints September regatta and performed well, with Knoah winning 3rd place as National Intermediate Champion. Sam also represented Great Britain at the Olympic Hopes Regatta in Hungary last month, with excellent results.
Our inaugural Year 8 'Careers Detective Day’ was held on Wednesday 16th October 2024 and we were delighted to welcome representatives from a wide range of careers to take part in the event.
Students were set the challenge of trying to guess what our visitors' jobs were, without asking this directly but finding the right questions to ask in a limited time, before moving on to the next person. Employers were asked to bring an object with them that they rely on for their work, but ensuring it didn’t give away their job too easily. This gave Year 8 students an invaluable opportunity to find out more about the range of jobs that are possible and explore the career journey required to do them.
Students enjoyed this event very much and we are incredibly grateful to the members of the local community who kindly gave up their time to support us.

At our AGM on 21st May 2024 we said a heartfelt thank you to teacher Nic Bexon, who is stepping down as PTA Chair after five years in the role. Nic, who was a member for three years before taking on the role of Chair, has done a tremendous amount for the PTA and the school during her tenure. We’re incredibly lucky that she has agreed to stay involved as a member of the committee to provide ongoing support and guidance.
Nikki Smith now takes the reins as our new Chair and we look forward to sharing news with you about the great things the PTA have recently funded after half term, as well as updating you on our plans for the coming year.
New members and ideas are always welcome, so if you’d like to get involved or just hear what’s going on, please join us at our next meeting on Thursday 14th November at 7.00pm in the school library. We’ll have someone at the visitor reception to collect and bring any new members along.
Alumnus Peter Walker showing Headteacher Craig Thomas some school memorabilia from the late 1950s when Bartholomew School first opened on the Witney Road site
We had a surprise visitor to our Open Evening in September. The gentleman pictured here with Mr Thomas, Headteacher is a Mr Peter Walker, who was one of the first students at Bartholomew School when it opened on the Witney Road site in the late 1950s, where the school is still located, further to being located in what is now the Bartholomew Rooms in the centre of Eynsham village.
Mr Walker had so many fond memories of his time at Bartholomew School and took the opportunity to attend our event along with his son and grandson, who is in Year 6 and considering joining us for Year 7 in 2025. His alumni status was revealed during a conversation with Mr Paterson, former Duke of Edinburgh's (DofE) Award Manager. He recounted tales of his DofE experience (though he never received a badge) and went on to reveal that he had brought a selection of original school reports, drama flyers, photos and trip diaries from his time at the School.
Mr Walker explained that trips 'back in those days' were very different and remembered one being six weeks long! He particularly enjoyed the sport at school and played on the football team with Mr Peter Ward, coincidentally his friend, who later went on to train as a teacher and work at Bartholomew School.
It was wonderful to hear such lovely memories and those of us who had the opportunity to meet Mr Walker were delighted to hear about his time at our school and see the collection of memorabilia.
We held an Open Evening event for prospective Year 7 students and their families on Thursday 21st September and welcomed around 1000 visitors.
