Effects

How free were the African Americans during the Civil War, and how many rights did the African Americans get during the Civil war. 

”During the Civil War, perhaps the most common escape plan for slaves was to take shelter among the Union troops located in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  Maryland, as a border slave state held within the Union, was occupied by federal troops throughout the Civil War” ( African Americans: The struggle for Freedom).

The African Americans were not free throughout the Civil War, because they were border slave states held within the union.
