Summary of Day 1
Nathan - G12
Once we arrived at Villa Segara Lestari in Les Village from a 3 hours bus ride we were all seated down in a common area where we went through an orientation where we were introduced to all the staff in the villa and all the people which were going to be helping us throughout our EOTC journey. Once we were familiar with all the faces the students broke into their 3 different groups (Salt farming, diving, and English teaching) to recap what the objectives were for the 3 days and for the divers it was a chance to sort out all the equipment needed.
After the students were introduced to a new climate change CAS activity being run by Ms.Vera where the students broke into 5 groups to research about 5 different climate change-related topics which are affecting Bali. Then the students and teachers were introduced to a marine debris presentation run by Pak Garri. Where then students collected trash along the coastline and then segregated the trash into different categories to help collect data for the marine debris project.
After this, we all showered and had a nice Indonesian dinner provided by the restaurant at the Villa. Once dinner was done we all gathered in the common area again to work on the climate change CAS activity and discussed our findings with each other. A good start to the EOTC week.
Day 2 - Aine Quinn
Morning swim here at Les Village, great way to wash away the salt after 6am farming session. Farmers will continue their work with Les Village communities today on salt products, applying tools learned in Econ/Business to work with farmers on their product packaging and marketing. Our English teaching group will first work with the guides, teaching English through Balinese culture, and later today will visit a local school and have the opportunity to work the the local teachers and their Gr4 and Gr5 students. A primary focus for our coral rehabilitation diving group today will be dive safety, they will also complete their first dive and work with the Les Village team on land building structures used in the coral rehabilitation.
Day 2 - Tarkan G12 - Salt Framing Group
It’s the second day of the DP Les village EOTC Trip. Today we collaborated with the local villagers and salt farmers to develop and improve their salt products. Our main focus for today was to brainstorm ideas on how we can expand their market and improve their promotional strategies. Last year we introduced the bath bomb product and held a workshop with the farmers to show how to create them. Since then, the local villagers have established a line of bath bombs and have perfected the production method. A main concern of their products is their short shelf-life of three weeks. This limits their ability to sell the products on a larger scale and to retailers.
Day 2 - Sasha, Lucie, Jessica G12 -
Coral Rehabilitation Group
Today, as divers, we started off with an observational dive that proved to be very rewarding, as we had seen that the spider web structures that we had placed last year, had coral growing. This helped motivate us to come up with new ideas for next years group. Before our second dive, Pak Garri gave us a presentation about the science behind corals and gave us an insight on our impact, this is significant because it relates to our subjects of biology and environmental systems and societies. This will help us to create links to our CAS and our school subjects. Working collaboratively with our diving guides on our second dive, we took baby corals and placed them on larger structures amongst other coral. This allowed us to see the effect of a coral reef being rebuilt by our efforts. These dives helped us understand in what ways we could further extend our influence on Les Village sea communities and to rehabilitate this endangered biological ecosystem.
Day 2 - Iona Leys G12 - English Teaching Group
Today was the first day that we met up with the adults and the children that we were going to teach. We taught the adults about the basics of guiding a tour by utilising roleplay and also a demonstration/class about Balinese offerings. Although, there were some scheduling conflicts, however we persevered through it. Next, we went to the local elementary school. One group taught grade 4 and one group taught grade 5. Both groups had interactive learning, utilising games and songs such as pictionary, Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, and hangman etc. All in all, we had a successful first day teaching and I think for tomorrow we need to improve on our organisation skills.
Day 3
Day 3
Good morning all. Last session of salt farming, then hike to waterfall to finish off our time here with the Les Village Community...
Day 3 Reflection - English Teaching Group - G12 Winona
Before meeting with the local guides for the second time, we had a brief group discussion on things that we could improve on and our plans for both the local guides and the children in the afternoon. After breakfast, we met up with the local guides and this time switched groups where the ones who were teaching the male guides the day before would teach the female guides today, and vice versa. With the female guides, we reviewed the basic hospitality terminology, which they had studied the day before. We then taught them simple terminologies about clothing translated from Bahasa to English and played games. Doing this helps them with applying these terminologies and sharing about their own cultural fashion. With the male guides, we helped them with sample wordings and basic sentences. Our aim was to help them to increase tourism in the village. Afterwards, we switched things and the female guides taught us to make ceremonial offerings. Before finishing our class, we went to the temple to learn about the traditions and prayers. In the afternoon we went to the primary school and again divided into our groups to teach the 4th and 5th graders. We taught the 5th graders simple food and beverage vocabularies and then went on to teach them about vocabulary linked to their current unit of study anatomy. We also taught the 4th graders simple alphabets, emotion vocabulary and anatomy. Towards the end, our groups played games to quiz the children on the vocabulary they learned from the class. Something we improved on from yesterday was our organizational skills since this time, we were all well prepared and had a plan of what we were going to teach them at our meeting. All in all, they were all very enthusiastic to want to learn and we were all also very excited to teach them.
Grade 12 - Mariia - Evening of culture - Day 3
At our last evening in Les Village we enjoyed a traditional Balinese dance. The first dance they have performed is called Tari Topeng which means mask dance in Indonesian. Topengperformances open with a series of non-speaking masked characters which may not be related to the story to be performed. After the Tari Topeng, a women in kebaya has performed a Balinese dance. She called people out from the crowd to dance together with her. There were some moments that was truly fun and memorable. When Tarkan, Mr. Wood and Mr. Klaus were dancing together, their dance was full with funny moves and facial expressions, and even their awkwardness made it look more hilarious. Another thing that made all of us to laugh was when Jae Yeon chased Mr. Gokalp to dance. The fact that he was running away from dancing made us all laugh and smile. Overall, we had so many laughs, cheering up and smiles throughout the day. This memory for sure has become one of the most memorable and unforgettable.
Day 3 - Waste Management - Gr12 - Nabil
As well as carrying on our work on the salt farms we also had a chance to visit the waste management center. We were amazed to see how the workers were trying to do their best in a bad situation. They seem to be very positive when finding solutions to the plastic problems. Although we are happy with the efforts the locals are putting in, we are very disheartened with the fact that their only possible solution right now is to recycle their plastic waste and sell them at a very low price to other countries. This is also done with a high labour intensity which makes it very sad that they are getting paid really low.
We also realized that this solution that they have come up with is a short term solution and that we need to come up with possible objectives for next year's group if they are to continue this project. An area the community told us they had difficulties with, was in terms of segregating the plastic and this was due to the insufficient labeling of plastic packaging. Due to the challenged face with segregating the different types of plastics another problem arises which caused the plastic to be stuck on the machines and would be very time consuming for them to always fix the machine. It is also possible that we look into laws in terms of how the plastics are labelled and used in packaging
JaeYeon - G12 - Day 4
To round up our trip in Les Village, we went for a hike to the waterfall. After sweating, we dipped into the waterfall to refresh ourselves, took pictures, had a rests and returned back to camp. Before leaving the Les Village community, we gathered one last time with our guides where we expressed our thanks for the opportunity to work and grow with. The community gave us all the gift of a t-shirt and thanked us for visiting and working with them.
