AVID is transforming the educational experience for
many students at Altar Valley Middle School
Welcome to another exciting edition of the AVMS newsletter! As principal, I have the privilege of seeing the incredible work our students and staff are doing each day. At AVMS, we provide our students with the opportunity to develop skills that will serve them for a lifetime. Our focus is on helping students identify their strengths, take responsibility for their choices, and grow into accountable, empowered individuals.
Through programs like AVID, students are equipped with tools to track both their challenges and achievements, encouraging them to reflect on their personal growth. Together, we are laying the groundwork for success—not just in school, but in life. Below, our AVID team highlights some of the exciting things happening at AVMS.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of education, preparing students for high school and beyond has never been more crucial. One program making waves in middle schools nationwide is AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. Designed to foster college and career readiness and a strong work ethic from an early age, AVID is transforming the educational experience for many students.
What is AVID?
AVID is not just an educational program; it's a comprehensive support system aimed at closing the achievement gap by providing students with the skills and strategies they need to succeed in rigorous academic environments.
Core Components of AVID
AVID’s approach is multifaceted, integrating several core components to maximize student achievement:
College Readiness Focus: From middle school, AVID emphasizes the importance of higher education. Students engage in activities that promote college awareness, including exploring various college and career options and understanding the admissions process.
Skill Development: AVID teaches essential organizational and study skills, such as note-taking, time management, and critical thinking. The program encourages students to develop habits that will serve them well in high school and college.
Supportive Environment: AVID creates a supportive classroom environment where students are encouraged to set high goals and are provided with the resources to achieve them. Teachers act as mentors, offering guidance and encouragement.
Interactive Learning: The program doesn't just teach, it engages. AVID promotes interactive learning techniques, including collaborative study groups and Socratic seminars. This approach helps students build confidence in their abilities and learn to work effectively with peers, making them feel more engaged and involved in their own learning process.
Altar Valley Middle School is fortunate to have AVID and all it brings to its campus and culture. AVMS looks forward to continuing to develop an AVID mindset and seeing all its students thrive.
