Dear Parents,
Coming back after winter break teachers, students and staff are energized and ready to reach our goals!! We are looking forward to a productive partnership with parents, guardians, staff, community members, and students so that our students can achieve their highest potential as we finish the 2022 - 2023 school year. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our students need support from both home and school. We know a strong partnership with the adults in the students' life makes a great difference in their education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our student’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We seek your support to ensuring student success:
1) Ensure student attends school daily and arrives on time, ready to learn
2) Support the completion of all homework assignments given by teachers
3) Encourage reading daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
4) Encourage sharing school experiences with an adult so there is a connection to his/her school life
5) Inform an adult if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
6) Ensure he/she knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school and become a lifelong learner
If you have some extra time please consider joining our school volunteer program as our students can greatly benefit from your involvement and contributions to the school’s program and its operations. We seek volunteers to help us with the following activities:
1) Teacher-led instructional support, usually in the classroom
2) Reading with children who need extra help
3) School-wide events
4) Student recognition events
5) Making copies, create bulletin board, and other clerical type tasks
As we look at our benchmark data it is evident that we have some work still to do; however, progress is being made. We are on track to meet our MAZE (reading comprehension), ORF (oral reading fluency) and CBM (math fluency curriculum based measures) goals by April of 2023 with 80% mastery.
Currently we are at:
6th Grade ORF - 77% and CBM - 44%;
7th Grade MAZE - 60% and CBM - 65%;
8th Grade MAZE - 82% and CBM - 74%.
We recently sent home benchmark results to allow parents/guardians to understand the areas that might need additional support and areas students are succeeding. If you have questions or would like the assessment clarified contact the office and we will be happy to go over it with you. Help us reach our goals.
In addition to academics students have the opportunity to participate in athletics. This year has been an exciting year for AVMS sports. Our first quarter started off with over 70 student-athletes combined playing Flag Football and Volleyball. This was the first year since Covid that we have had an A and B Flag Football team. With this increase in athletes, our skill levels improved and A and B Flag Football teams did not lose a game by more than 2 touchdowns, a marked improvement over last season. Our results for volleyball were also similar in that our numbers; participation increased and our A Volleyball team won their first game in two seasons. The start of the second quarter also saw similar turnouts for boys Basketball and Girls Soccer. This was the first time since Covid that we have had an A and B girls soccer team. Although we did not get a win for the season, the girls skill level and knowledge of the game built with each game. Our boys Basketball team had an amazing season with 3 wins and almost made the playoffs, but unfortunately, with the spin of a wheel, did not make it. There is excitement leading into 3rd Quarter sports with the arrival of new uniforms. These include new basketball, soccer, and baseball uniforms. Again, we have great participation after the first week of practice for Quarter 3 sports and are looking forward to this season and the rest of the year for AVMS Sports. Our Athletic Director Bridget Sankey brings a level of excitement that helps to foster a growing program!
I feel privileged to be a part of this school family. We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you at school events.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shelly Camp
