Welcome to the second semester Robles’ families!
We are back in school and in full swing of learning. This is our last quarter before we have to complete the State Testing and the Curriculum Based Measures assessments for the end of the school year. Please support your students by helping them practice their math facts at home.
1st Grade - needs to master addition
2nd Grade - needs to master subtraction
3rd Grade - needs to master multiplication
4th Grade - needs to master division
5th Grade - needs to master multiplication and division
Practicing flashcards for 5 minutes each night will help them be better prepared for the assessments and then next grade level.
February is love of reading month. Reading is a vital skill for all students at every grade level. Having your student read to you each night will help them build fluency. Teachers will be sending home grade level reading practice as part of student homework. Strengthening reading skills will increase student success in every subject.
We will be having a luncheon for Valentines’ Day, if you would like to come have lunch with your student. See the flier for more information about times and costs. We will also be preparing for Read Across America and Dr. Suess’ Birthday with a fun spirit week to come in March. Family Fun Night in February will be hosted at Robles on the 15th from 5:30-7:00 pm.
We love our community and are very proud to be your partner in education. We hope to see you at the upcoming events.
Sincerely,

Third Grade Newsletter
2023
The fantastic third grade students here at Robles Elementary School have been focusing on English language arts (ELA) which includes reading and writing. Third grade teachers are using the Science of Reading to teach the five main components of reading which are fundamental in the learning process. The five main components of reading include phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The teachers are also using researched based ways proven to improve students' writing skills. Third grade writing lessons are organized by Lexile measure which means the reading passages students are reading and writing about represents the students reading ability. In other words, the reading and writing material is at an appropriate difficulty level for students to learn and grow.
Students learned how to create outlines, annotate passages, as well as to find and use proof in order to create five paragraph essays answering writing prompts. The passages are thought-provoking and create lots of conversations in the classroom. Students are highly engaged because the writing lessons are fun and interactive. Third grade students are writing expository, informative, opinion, and narrative essays. Lessons are scaffold to help support students in developing procedural strategies to draft and write a complete text which answers a prompt.
Third grade students are provided with daily time to read, write, and have discussions. Students are becoming fluent with handwriting, spelling, sentence construction, typing, and word processing since English language arts (ELA) lessons are scaffolded for students. The thought-provoking passages are helping to create an engaged community of writers since students are encouraged to communicate in groups. Students also have the opportunity for individual reflection, teacher-student conferences, and peer editing which creates a positive learning community.
