Over the past half century, the AVP family has grown and spread to over 32 USA states and over 60 countries on six continents. Annually, AVP-USA local groups organized and conducted over 1,000 workshops involving approximately 12,000 participants. Over 80 percent of the AVP-USA workshops have been facilitated in federal, state and local prisons.
Present
In 2025 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Alternative to Violence Project (AVP) whose many participants and facilitators continue to spread the seeds of peace and nonviolence to communities around the world.
In 2026 and beyond, what can AVP continue to offer the world? What internal issues are holding us back from meeting our potential as an organization dedicated to conflict transformation?
What can you expect at 50th anniversary AVP-USA Annual National Gathering?
AVP-USA and AVP-International come together to celebrate our shared accomplishments, reflect on our journey, and envision a future of continued growth and impact. As part of the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), this gathering provides an opportunity for participants to unite in our commitment to promoting peace, nonviolence, and personal transformation. By sharing experiences, strengthening connections, and deepening our collective vision, AVP-USA and AVP-International renew our dedication to creating safer, more compassionate communities worldwide. Together, we look ahead to expanding our reach and continuing our vital work of fostering understanding and resolving conflict peacefully.

50th Anniversary- What a History!!
We will be celebrating our history with a written piece by Pat Ryan who is a Green Haven AVP volunteer. We ask you to bring copies of pictures and/or stories to affix to our 50 year timeline from which we can make a video. We also plan for some storytelling sessions For more information, contact Pat Ryan at paddyryan42@gmail.com or program@avpusa.org
The Future of AVP-USA from Co-Presidents Willie Brown and Sean Bell
Willie and Sean will discuss the Future of AVP-USA, followed by breakout sessions focusing on the future. Two sets of breakout sessions along these themes will follow. Check out the Breakout Sessions on the Programs page for more information!
We invite breakout session proposals, speaker suggestions and still-forming ideas. Do you have a presentation to offer, an experiential activity to share or a discussion to lead? Would you like to be a partner or a resource for other presenters? Would you be willing to volunteer for an hour or two or more to support the gathering? Would you just like to share with us how excited you are? Do you know someone with expertise that you would encourage us to consult?
