College and Career Readiness

Goal 2: Ensure all students graduate college and career ready.

2.1 College Prep Courses and Academic Counseling

Provide opportunities for students to learn about college, understand what it takes to be college-ready, and support students in preparing for college.

Academic Counseling: the counselor will provide academic counseling for all students in grades 7-12 to assist students in understanding what it takes to be college ready.  The counselor will also help to increase a-g course offerings and a-g completion rates and support dual enrollment opportunities with Mendocino College and Santa Rosa Junior College.

Senior Advisor: A 0.17 FTE Senior Advisor will oversee all aspects of the Senior Project graduation requirement and provide one-to-one college advising for seniors to navigate through college application processes, student financial aid applications and scholarship applications.

A-G Completion Improvement:  Implement, monitor and evaluate A-G Completion plan.

2.2 Career Technical Education and Pathways

Sustain and enhance Career Pathways and provide career education, exploration, and opportunities to prepare students for high-skill, high-need and high pay careers. Provide and expand on Career Technical Education courses at the high school level. Leverage local and grant funding to offer comprehensive career education opportunities for all students. Develop the CTE Academy at AVHS to create a career-focused graduation pathway, funded through the Strong Workforce Program Grant and other grant resources.

Create meaningful school/work mentorship connections for real-world work experiences.  Create real world campus-based opportunities for work experience with the student apparel store, vending machine projects, opportunities for partnership with off-site college courses delivered by Mendocino College for coursework such as the auto mechanics program and other career oriented projects.

2.3 College and Career Supports

Prepare students to be college and career ready when they leave AVUSD.

Personal Learning Plans: Continue to implement the current 6 year Personal Learning Plans for each AVHS student. PLP Advisors meet with students to work on short and long term goals, prepare digital portfolios, receive additional academic support, and prepare for student-parent-teacher PLP conferences.

A-G Alignment: Align Career Technical Education and requirements for graduation with A-g courses, giving students increased opportunities to be A-g Completers upon graduation.

College and Career Counseling: Provide ongoing college and career counseling information and activities for students and parents. Provide resources, presentations and informational sessions to students and families in regards to the UC/CSU A-g requirements, Career Pathways, and scholarship opportunities. Begin student and parent education in the Elementary grades.

Careers Course: Provide CCS100, a dual enrollment course, through Mendocino College that prepares students for creating a 10-year plan for high school, post-secondary education and career. This course will be taken during an AVHS student’s sophomore year.

Senior Seminar: Continue to offer the Senior Seminar course that prepares 12th grade students for the successful completion of a capstone Senior Project, assists with college and career support and counseling services, and prepares students for post secondary college and career opportunities.

Activities: Provide College and Career Exploration activities for grades 7-12 (field trips, presentations, speakers).
