The marginalization and isolation of senior citizens across the globe as evidenced by their care options in later life.
In this music elective, Avenues students will go outside their comfort zone to meet and develop relationships with senior citizens in our immediate community. Through trading life stories and exploring the role of music with senior partners, students will identify how their lives are similar and how they differ. Students will then explore living options for senior citizens throughout the globe and through time and identify societal factors that have contributed to their choices. Finally, students will work in large musical ensembles to learn music revealed to be important to their senior partners culminating in a performance at which their lives are celebrated.
Over the course of J-Term, the music students will be learning about the power of music. They watched a documentary Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory. The documentary features social worker Dan Cohen through his nonprofit organization Music and Memory, which advocates for the use of music therapy with dementia patients. In a couple of weeks, the group will perform at the Fulton Center for a group of senior citizens. Here is a behind the scenes look of the students rehearsing Stand By Me for the concert.
On Thursday, January 12, the specialized music program students took a visit to the Fulton Community Center. They spent the day with older adult participants chatting about music and asking them what kinds of music have meant the most to anthem in their lives. Students will now learn some of these songs and perform on their return trip to the Center on Thursday, January, 26 in order to honor and celebrate the lives of our neighbors at the Fulton Center.

On Tuesday, January 17, the music students watched the movie "Coco." The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family among the living and to reverse his family's ban on music. The movie depicts the power of music and how older generations are treated in different cultures and societies. The students see further how music ties us all together.
The 6th and 7th graders in "The Power of Music" started learning I Will Survive in preparation for their concert at the Fulton Center. They are excited to perform the songs that were suggested by the senior citizens.
