Research databases, on and off campus

Why use a database for online research?

Research databases contain reliable, fact-checked information that is acceptable for high-school level research. Online encyclopedias like World Book Online and Encyclopaedia Brittanica contain articles about many different subjects, while a database like EBSCO provides access to magazine, journal and newspaper articles. Other databases, like Issues and Controversies or Science Online provide information on specific subjects. One nice feature about most databases is that they provide a ready-made citation for your bibliography or Works Cited page.

We have access to several research databases through the iBistro online library catalog's Knowledge Portal. Here's how to access them:

  • On campus, type catalog.austinisd.org into the top address bar
  • Choose High Schools on the right, and then choose Crockett
  • Scroll down to the Symbaloo squares - each one is a different database. Place your cursor on the square to see the title of that database in a larger font.

The document below, AISD Research Databases, contains descriptions of each database, and information on how to access them off-campus. Look around each product to get a feel for how they work. Don't be afraid to explore!
