Library Rules and other things you ought to know...

Yes, we have a few rules here in the CHS Library. It's all pretty obvious and boring, yet fair and necessary. Read at your leisure! Basically, don't bring in food and drink, keep it a learning environment, you can check out a book for 2 weeks, and printouts and copies cost a dime. Here's the details:

LIBRARY USE

Please follow these procedures when using the library:

  • No pass needed before or after school or during lunch period.
  • During class periods, students MUST have a signed and dated library permit (not a hall or bathroom pass) from a classroom teacher. Gym or sports students, ask your coach for a Library Athletics pass.
  • Put library permit in basket at circulation desk when entering the library.
  • Sign in electronically at the circulation desk.
  • PLEASE no food or drink (water is OK) in the library or computer labs.
  • PLEASE no cell phone conversations in the library.
  • Students using the library to study may use devices with headphones, as long as they cannot be heard by others.
  • If you are here to study, please do not talk with students in library classes.
  • Classes have priority for library computer use - if you are asked to log off a computer for an incoming class, we will try our best to find you an empty computer once the class is settled.
  • Please be respectful of other students and staff working in the library - talk quietly, use classroom manners and clean up your area before leaving.
  • During lunch, the Fiction section is a designated Quiet Study Area. If you wish to talk or play board games from the cart, please sit in the Non-Fiction, Reference, or lounge area.

BORROWING

You'll need to have your student ID or know your ID number to borrow items. Students may borrow up to four items at a time. Materials are checked out for two weeks and may be renewed twice, unless other students are waiting. Books in the Reference section and books on reserve carts for classes may not be checked out. Students with overdue items may not borrow additional materials until overdues are returned.

RESEARCH HELP

We are always here to help you make sense of research projects. Stop by the circulation desk for help with the online catalog, using databases, finding books, and any research-related questions.

PRINTING

You may print out from the computers for 10 cents a page. Please come to the circulation desk to pick up your papers and pay. Printing is black and white only.

COPYING

Copying is available at 10 cents a page. We cannot copy large quantities, make class handouts or reproduce copyrighted material.

REFERENCE

Books in the Reference section are for use in the library only. Here you will find encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and reference books on specific subjects, such as science encyclopedias and primary source series. Some Reference titles may be checked out overnight - please ask Mrs. Gibson.

NON-FICTION

Non-fiction books circulate and are organized by Dewey Decimal number, from 000 to 999. If you are unsure how to find a non-fiction book, please ask!

FICTION

The fiction area is in the front of the library and contains a wide variety of young adult literature, literary classics and story collection (short story) books, shelved by author's last name.

BIOGRAPHIES, COLLECTIVE BIOGRAPHIES, GRAPHIC NOVELS, BILINGUAL, SPANISH AND FRENCH BOOKS...

Yep, we have all of these! Look for the signs for each bookcase, or just ask.

NEW BOOKS

New fiction and non-fiction books are displayed on the New Books shelves in front of the circulation desk. If you have a suggestion for a new book, please fill out a card and drop it in the box!

AUDIO BOOKS

Ever heard a book? Audio books are available on CD, PlayAway (looks like an iPod) and feature professional actors and sound effects. Great for long car or bus rides, waiting in the doctor's office, etc. They can be checked out for two weeks, just like a book.

PUZZLES & GAMES

We have games like Chess, Uno, backgammon and Connect Four for use in the library. Ask at the circulation desk.
