Introduction to Geospatial Data
The Introduction to Geospatial Data Competency-Based Educational (CBE) curriculum is divided into 4 competencies - each covering three topics. Each topic includes a lecture, demonstration, exercise, quiz, and project summary task that takes approximately 5-6 hours to complete...so students can expect to spend 60-72 hours to complete all 12 topics in this Introduction to Geospatial Data course.
Lectures introduce concepts and discuss their application;
Demonstrations apply these concepts using industry-standard GIS software;
Exercises reinforce concepts and build proficiency;
Quizzes assess your comprehension with 5 conceptual and 5 practical questions; and
Projects include a work breakdown structure (i.e. list of tasks) with topic-related summary tasks that build on lectures, exercises, and demonstrations.
There are 4 competency-level projects and students can use their project deliverables to build a professional portfolio demonstrating their introductory GIS skills.
To successfully complete Introduction to Geospatial Data, you should have access to :
A Windows-based desktop or laptop computer capable of running ArcGIS Pro - see System Requirements;
A reliable Internet connection;
Google Docs, Google Sheets, Looker Studio, and Google Sites Workspace cloud-based apps (free access);
ArcGIS Pro 3.x GIS desktop software (an ArcGIS Personal License is $100 per year);
ArcGIS Online cloud-based software (included with ArcGIS Personal License);
Software to view Adobe PDF documents (*.pdf files);
Software to extract WinZIP archives (*.zip files); and
An external USB flash or hard drive with at least 2GB of storage.
Before beginning Topic 1.1. you should use Windows File Explorer to create a course folder structure on your local computer similar to the following image.
