About me

Hi! I’m Dr. Lynn Ybarra, and I’m a Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) faculty advisor and adjunct associate professor of mathematics at ACC. As a faculty advisor, I love helping students figure out where they want to go and then working with them to build a path to get there.

College can sometimes feel like a giant puzzle, especially when you are trying to choose a major, figure out which classes to take, or understand how your ACC courses will fit into a bachelor’s degree. My goal is to help make that process a little less overwhelming. I enjoy helping students explore their interests, identify possible career paths, understand their degree requirements, and make informed decisions about courses and transfer options. Whether you have your whole future planned out or have absolutely no idea what you want to do yet, you are welcome to reach out. Sometimes figuring out what you don’t want to do is an important part of the process, too!

As a faculty advisor, I work alongside your regular academic and student support advisors. I can provide additional guidance from a faculty perspective, particularly when you are exploring science, mathematics, engineering, or related fields. I especially enjoy helping students connect their coursework to their long-term goals and finding opportunities that can help them prepare for transfer, research, professional school, or their future careers.

Outside of ACC, my biggest job is being a mom. I have seven children, which means my house has never been particularly quiet! Four of my kids have been or are currently ACC students, so I’ve experienced ACC from both the advisor and parent perspectives. My kids have taken very different paths. My oldest went straight into the workforce. My second transferred to Arizona State University, earned a BS in biological sciences with concentrations in genetics and cellular and developmental biology, and is now a medical laboratory scientist. My third is studying data engineering and Japanese at Texas A&M. My fourth is transferring from ACC to Texas State to pursue a BS in Biology as she prepares for optometry school. My next child is a dual-credit student who is just beginning ACC’s Culinary Arts program. The younger ones are still figuring things out, with interests ranging from ACC’s automotive mechanic programs to working with wolves and other animals. My littlest is especially interested in the idea of working at a wolf sanctuary in Central Texas!

When I have some free time, I love crocheting, spending time outdoors with my family, and The Lord of the Rings. Recently, I’ve been channeling my inner hobbit by learning to garden!

I am a proud graduate of Arizona State University, so you will occasionally hear me say, “Go Devils!” I also have plenty of Aggie connections in my family, so “Gig 'Em!” makes an appearance from time to time. And, of course, now that I work at ACC: Go Riverbats!

I’m really glad you’re here. I hope you’ll introduce yourself, ask questions, and take advantage of the resources available to you at ACC. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you come talk to an advisor. Sometimes the best place to start is simply, “I’m not sure what I want to do yet.” I’d love to help you explore your options and find a path that works for you!
