Are you interested in becoming a mathematics or statistics major? Welcome to the party!
Mathematics is a growing field with many pure math concentrations and many areas of applied mathematics. Review some possible career descriptions below.
I encourage you to look over the differing degree options at our nearby universities and follow the links to the department sites at those institutions. Each site contains valuable information about the course of study and career opportunities available to mathematicians.
Math degrees are versatile and adaptable to pure research, teaching, or application in biological sciences, business, economics, computer science, engineering, and other fields. Every math degree teaches you the quantitative and analytical skills necessary to succeed in your chosen career field.
Pure Mathematician - A pure mathematician earns a graduate degree in mathematics and develops new theories in a variety of math disciplines including ring theory, number theory, analysis, etc. Sometime in the future, scientists will apply these new theories to their fields, but the pure mathematician studies mathematics for its own sake rather than its applications.
Actuarial Scientist - Actuarial scientists take electives in economics and finance. They use statistics and probability to analyze the economic risk of uncertainty. Many actuarial scientists work in insurance industries.
Biomathematician - Biomathematicians choose electives in biology and chemistry. They develop mathematical models to describe and investigate living organisms and biological systems. Biomathematicians use these detailed mathematical models to simulate biological processes and gain insight not readily available to the experimenter in the lab. The use of logistics functions to model population growth is a simple example found at the College Algebra level.
Statistician - Statisticians use software to visualize and analyze data and design experiments or surveys to gather necessary data. They work with data scientists and analysts in a variety of fields to inform public policy and company decisions. Statistics students choose electives in an applicable field to better prepare them to analyze industry or government data in that field.
Economic analyst - Economic analysts choose their electives in economics and business, science, or engineering. They develop detailed mathematical models to describe economic and financial issues to inform policy decisions in both government and technological industries. Economic analysts work closely with data scientists and experts in their chosen industry.
Cryptographer - Cryptography is an application of number theory focusing on cybersecurity. Students take many electives in computer science and then work in government or many technological industries. Applied mathematicians in cryptography are also prepared to enter graduate studies in computer science if desired.
Here at ACC we offer advanced math courses leading to an Associates of Science in Mathematics. Some, but not all, of these classes can be applied to a degree plan at a 4-year institution. Choose your ACC courses with an eye to your future studies to ensure you do not repeat any classes needlessly.
