What is Faculty Advising?
The Faculty Advising program seeks to strengthen student connection to instructional departments by offering faculty advising, learning communities, and department-specific programming with the goal of helping students understand how their major path translates into their future work and career aspirations.
I work with General Studies in Science students to help you declare a more specific major at ACC or to help you select just the right courses within the general studies degree plan that will transfer to your major at your 4-year institution.
Why should I meet with a Science, Engineering, and Math (SEM) Faculty Advisor?
Are you just beginning to look at science-related fields? Are you interested in SEM but not sure quite what you want to study? Do you know what you want to study but do not know which university has the best program for you? Have you already chosen a degree and a transfer institution yet do not know what type of job you can realistically get with your planned degree? Your SEM faculty advisors can help you answer all those questions and much more.
Is General Studies in Science the right major for me?
ACC offers many subject-specific degree plans within the SEM Area of Study including biology, biotechnology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, geology, mathematics, and physics. However, many university degrees, like neuroscience or oceanography, are multidisciplinary requiring science courses from many fields. General Studies AS is the major of choice allowing you the flexibility to take classes that best transfer to your intended bachelor's program while still earning a degree at ACC. General Studies students are highly encouraged to work closely with an advisor comparing ACC's degree plan with your 4-year institution's major requirements. As all SEM fields require extensive mathematics, students are also highly encouraged to begin a math course their first semester at ACC.
What do I do if I need non-academic help?
ACC offers a plethora of student support services to help you on your journey. We have academic services such as transfer services and tutoring as well as personal support such as mental health services and food assistance, technology support, and financial support such as scholarships and the student emergency fund.
