Day of the dead at acc
Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead (All Saints Day / All Souls Day) is a holiday that intersects many disciplines including history, sociology, geography, religious studies, anthropology, and more. It will be celebrated around the world through cultural and religious practices on November 1st and 2nd as a time for celebration of our ancestors who have departed.
This year ACC will present a Cultural Mosaic through connection, collaboration, and care (3Cs) and you are invited to celebrate Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead across different ACC campuses and online.
El Día de los Muertos, en inglés "Day of the Dead," es una celebración que representa varias disciplinas curriculares como la historia, sociología, geografía, estudios religiosos, antropología, etc. Se celebra alrededor del mundo a través de la cultura y prácticas religiosas el 1o y 2o de Noviembre para celebrar a nuestros antepasados.
Este año ACC presenta un mosaico cultural a través de la conexión, colaboración y cariño (3Cs) y te invitamos a celebrar el Día de Los Muertos / Day of the Dead en varios campus y en línea.

AUSTIN BOOK FESTIVAL SHOWCASE - "DINNING WITH THE DEAD: A FEAST FOR THE SOULS"
Join local authors, Mariana and Ian, as they tell the story and evolution of their book focusing on Mexican Cuisine and photography of Mexico tied to the cultural traditions of Día de Los Muertos.
The event will take place at ACC Highland's Eatery 73, ACC's student-run restaurant.

VOLUNTEERING AT VIVA LA VIDA! FESTIVAL AND PARADE
Austin Community College’s Service-Learning Program is partnering with Mexic-Arte Museum to offer volunteer opportunities with Mexic-Arte Museum to participate in their 40th Annual Viva la Vida! Festival and Parade, co-sponsored by the Austin Convention Center and the City of Austin in celebration of Día de los Muertos.

The event will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 12:00pm - 6:00pm at 4th and Congress Avenue, and volunteers are needed beginning at 8:00am. Participants can learn about Día de los Muertos here click on Mexic-Arte’s Day of the Dead gallery guide. Students, faculty, and staff should sign up here, and ACC volunteers should write “Austin Community College” under “Affiliated Organization” to receive a special certificate! All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt!

DEATH AND RELIGION - THE INTERSECTIONALITY OF CULTURES
FEATURING DEATH SCHOLAR DR. CANDI CANN
Death scholar Dr. Candi Cann will share excerpts from her extensive research on death and dying to help us connect the relevance with cultural celebrations and death rituals. She will speak about Día de Los Muertos, Qing Ming, Chuseok, and Native American indigenous traditions to also honor the start of Native American Heritage Month. Dr. Cann currently serves as an Associate Professor at Baylor University and her research focuses on death, dying, and grief.

CALAVERA PAINTING AT EL CENTRO
The ACC community is invited to come by El Centro, ACC's Latin American Cultural Center, at the Riverside Campus to paint a calavera in remembrance of a loved one. El Centro will provide assorted ceramic calaveras plus paints and painting supplies throughout the day.
Calavera painting at El Centro will take place on both Wednesday, November 1st, and Thursday, November 2nd.
