Housing Looking Forward: Design Ideas for a Changing Community
Saturday, May 16 | 11:00 AM–12:30 PM | Austerlitz Town Hall
What could the future of housing in Austerlitz look like while still preserving the rural character we value? Join the Austerlitz Housing Committee for an engaging presentation with Holesum Studio, a local design firm known for creative, practical solutions rooted in community and place.
This lively program will explore innovative housing ideas for small towns and rural communities, including modular homes, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), clustered housing, and smart design options that help older residents downsize or age in place. Learn how thoughtful planning can create more housing choices for families, seniors, and future generations without sacrificing open space or local identity.
The presentation will also highlight sustainability, energy efficiency, and inspiring real-world examples from communities facing similar challenges. Whether you’re curious, concerned, skeptical, or inspired, this event is for you. Come see what’s possible, ask questions, and join the conversation about housing that works for Austerlitz—today and tomorrow.

New Wetlands Regulatory Process (Oct.2025)
The state DEC has issued new regulations on how determinations are made as to whether a parcel or project affect regulated wetlands. The old DEC wetlands maps are no longer determinative and a request to DEC for a wetlands jurisdiction determination is now necessary for each parcel that may be part of any subdivisions, site plan, special use permit and building permit. The form(s) and regulations are posted on the DEC website (search: wetlands). The Planning Board has adopted a new form in compliance with the regulations. (See our forms page) Because applications to the Planning Board in most instances cannot be deemed complete until the DEC process is completed, early submission to the DEC is recommended before you make your Town of Austerlitz application.
