How You Can Help at Home
Reading is a team effort. Be involved in this routine.
Ask to see their chapter book: When they come home on Library day Wednesdays. Ask which chapter book they selected.
Read along with them: Whether you read a chapter aloud together or simply read your own book nearby, your engagement makes a world of difference.
Explore the Lexile List: Our school librarian has compiled an ongoing list of recommended books categorized by Lexile levels.
Finding the "Just Right" Fit
To help your child navigate the library shelves with confidence, each student has been given a personalized bookmark featuring their current Lexile range. We are practicing how to find books at their "just right" level. They are challenging enough to encourage growth, but accessible enough to stay enjoyable.
Use the 5 Finger Rule: Students should find some new challenging vocabulary words on the page. If they can count 1-4 new challenging words on a page then it's a good choice. If they find more than 5 challenging words that they don't know, then that's not a good fit. I tried to help everyone find a just right book today.
