DREAMers

You CAN go to College

Regardless of your citizenship status, you can go to college.

According to The College Board on Advising Undocumented Students, there is “...no federal or state law that prohibits the admission of undocumented immigrants to U.S. colleges, public or private.” Undocumented students can go to college.

Bottom line.

As you apply to colleges, keep in mind of the following

    • The admissions and/or financial aid process may be different from college to college.

    • Some colleges have more opportunities for undocumented students than others, especially financially.

    • Do research on colleges that are a good fit.

    • Find the policies of admissions and financial aid for the colleges you are applying to.

      • You may contact your regional admission counselor to discuss their application process for undocumented students.

    • Organize the admissions and financial aid documents needed.

    • Submit documents to the institution early and follow up a week later.

ASSET vs. DACA

  • ASSET: Effective Fall 2013, undocumented students who meet the qualifications for in-state tuition (attended a Colorado high school for at least three years & graduated from a Colorado high school, for example) under the Colorado ASSET bill can apply for university financial aid. These students will be identified through the admissions application process.

  • DACA: Eligible students may request consideration for deferred action for a period of two years and would then be eligible for work authorization (making them eligible to be considered for a work-study financial aid award).

Students who qualify for ASSET do not automatically qualify for DACA, and vice versa. A student may qualify for one but not the other, qualify for both, or qualify for neither.

Colorado Application for State Financial Aid

Colorado Application for State Financial Aid gives students immediate access to apply for the $160 million dollars Colorado allocates annually in financial aid.

This new online application allows Colorado students that have historically not qualified for federal aid, to complete an application for state financial aid. The Colorado Application for State Financial Aid (CASFA) is available HERE.

“CASFA positively supports families and is a logical next step in efforts to erase equity gaps and put college in reach for the families who benefit most from a postsecondary education,” said Dr. Angie Paccione, executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education. “This is one example of how Colorado demonstrates its commitment to educating all of our students on their academic journey.”
