To provide a space where APS staff populations, with self-identified commonalities, can come together in order to build community through connection and collaboration. Identified “spaces” are referred to as Affinity Groups and are intended to not only explore and address the needs of APS staff, but to carry forward and influence the educational experiences of our students. In addressing the needs of both students and staff, we look to ensure that they can bring their whole and authentic selves to APS schools and workplaces in an effort to improve overall staff of color recruitment and retention and student success rates.
Making room for Affinity Groups within APS affords every Staff the opportunity to see that their whole selves are welcome in the work environment in which they serve. While there remains a need for further opportunities to inform and influence change and to strengthen equity work in APS outside of the Affinity Groups, we believe the attached framework is a good starting point:
Continued improvement in retention of Staff of various marginalized identities
Improved staff belief and reality that APS is committed to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Improved perception and reality that Staff of various marginalized identities can bring their whole selves to work
Increased positive student experiences: academically, socially, and emotionally within APS schools
Upholding APS Values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Support, Respect, and Appreciation
