In alignment with Aurora Public Schools’ commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, we are proud to support and uplift the work of the LGBTQIA+ Affinity Group. We believe that equitable environments begin with supportive communities for our staff. As educators, we know that when we bring our full, authentic selves to our work, our entire school community thrives.
This affinity group serves as an active, empowering space for LGBTQIA+ educators and allies to collaborate, advocate, and champion inclusive practices across our district. By honoring the diverse identities of our staff, we strengthen our collective ability to cultivate safe, welcoming, and high-achieving learning environments for all students. Big things are on the horizon for this year—we invite you to join us, share your voice, and be part of the momentum.
We celebrate those who are living bravely and openly, while fiercely protecting the safety, privacy, and peace of mind of those who are not out. Our group is intentionally structured to support educators across the entire spectrum of their coming out journey. Whether you are out and proud, exploring your identity, or seeking a quiet, confidential space to connect, you belong here.
We provide tailored involvement options - including flexible communication channels, optional public visibility, and confidential peer support - so you can engage at whatever comfort level feels right for you. Your safety and autonomy are always our top priority.
Our primary goal is to cultivate a strong and supportive community where members can connect, network, and establish meaningful relationships. Through our affinity spaces, we aim to create an inclusive and empowering environment that benefits our members and directly impacts the students we serve.
Education and Cultural Awareness: Our affinity spaces are dedicated to educating others about different cultures, promoting cultural awareness, and fostering a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives. By sharing knowledge, experiences, and traditions, we cultivate a workplace that values and embraces cultural diversity. This understanding and appreciation of different cultures directly impact the students we serve by fostering an environment of respect, empathy, and curiosity. It also helps students develop a global mindset, preparing them to navigate a diverse society and collaborate effectively in a multicultural world.
Increasing Membership: We actively work towards increasing membership in our affinity spaces by expanding our reach and inviting more employees. Increased membership allows us to provide more resources, support, and opportunities for employees to connect, learn, and contribute to the positive transformation of our workplace and student experiences.
Outreach and Engagement: We engage with other affinity groups and the broader community to promote cross-cultural understanding and allyship. Through collaborative initiatives, we aim to create opportunities that benefit underrepresented groups within and beyond the workplace. By engaging in outreach activities that support students, we help to amplify their voices and provide them with the resources and support they need to thrive academically and personally.
By nurturing a strong and supportive community, celebrating diverse cultures, advocating for inclusion, engaging in outreach, promoting education and cultural awareness, and increasing membership, we create an environment that positively impacts students' academic success. When students feel supported, valued, and surrounded by individuals from various backgrounds who understand their unique challenges and contributions, they are more likely to thrive academically and develop essential life skills. Our affinity spaces contribute to an inclusive educational experience where students feel empowered to reach their full potential and excel academically.
