Rationale
Previous projects I have done, such as my Specialist Skills Development in night photography and the End of Year 1 Project, will influence how I develop and work on my FMP. This can be seen with my artistic development in night street photography, and reflecting what I can improve on - such as time management skills, workbook updating, and stress levels - that were lacklustre in my EOYP.
I am currently establishing and consistently developing my own photographic style; I always have meaning and research supporting my work, which enables my photography to have a fine-art appeal. Within this project, I will mature my practice by experimenting with this street photography concept.
Concept
My conceptual narrative will be conveyed to the viewer by using the compositional technique of creating anonymity by obscuring faces. I will do this because I want the subjects in my photos to create a collective consciousness that is faceless, which could compel the viewer to think about whom this person could be and what their story is.
I wish to not directly photograph the faces of strangers that will be my subjects, for several reasons. There could be ethical and confrontational risks, but it is mainly to better align with my concept of sonder and create a more unique, stylistic body of work.
Throughout this project, I aim to carry my camera with me as much as possible, so I am prepared for all photo opportunities that arise. This is an intentional effort in training my brain to think more like a street photographer, by analysing life and observing the people around me. Furthermore, I believe that all of these reasons will allow me to develop my technical skills and artistic eye as a photographer, and even become a more socially confident person overall.
Initially, I am planning on using my own equipment, being the: Canon R10, Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 lens, and Canon 28mm F2.8 prime lens. However, if these do not suit all of my low-light needs, then I will experiment with other equipment that is available to me, such as the Canon EF 50mm F1.8 lens. Using a fixed focal length for street photography is common practice, as they constrain the shooting parameters to a singular zoom level, which often makes them compact and faster. This allows the photographer to better focus their efforts into the composition and quickly capture the desired scene. Additionally, I will need to remember extra batteries and memory cards, to ensure I do not miss out on what could have been my best photos.
I do not necessarily want to resolve and conclude my conceptual investigation as I may want to further explore it in the future, and I do not think it is something I can single-handedly answer.
