Concept / Theme / Style - and why I want to do this:
The style for my project is street and documentary photography in urban environments, which will be thematically driven by the concept of Sonder. Sonder is a neologism, coined by John Koenig, that describes the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.
I want to explore this concept because it is a feeling that has followed me for many years, which I only recently discovered was an idea and philosophy that had an established terminology.
I will achieve this by creatively using composition to obscure my subjects and by seeking reflections, silhouettes, and shadows. Photographers I have seen do this are Billy Dinh, Eren Sarigul, and Michael Wolf.
Throughout this project, I aim to carry my camera with me as much as possible, so I am prepared for all photo opportunities that arise. This is an intentional effort in training my brain to think more like a street photographer, by analysing life and observing the people around me. Furthermore, I believe that all of these reasons will allow me to develop my technical skills and artistic eye as a photographer, and even become a more socially confident person overall.
Photographers & Artists who are influencing my planned work:
Saul Leiter – saulleiterfoundation
Joel Meyerowitz – joelmeyerowitz
Michael Wolf – photomichaelwolf
Billy Dinh – billydinh
Eren Sarigul – erenjam
Equipment I would like to use and experiment with:
Canon EOS R10 Mirrorless Camera
Canon RF 28mm F2.8 STM Pancake Lens
Sigma 18–50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens
I would like to experiment with 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm (full-frame equivalent field of view) prime lenses. When it comes to street photography, they offer vastly different framing and subject opportunities; I want this variety in my finished book and street portfolio.
Specialist techniques I would like to use and experiment with:
Anonymizing Compositions
Formatting book pages with Adobe InDesign
Multiple Exposure
Final outcome format:
A printed hardcover photo book, possibly including text and my conceptual research.

Before leaving for Berlin, I meticulously considered where I wanted to visit and photograph. I had to consider my family's interests and my own motivations for the trip, which lead to compromises. For example, I enjoy shooting in train stations, but my family did not want to spend much time in them. So, I would only shoot in them when we would pass through during travel.
Where I planned to go:
Where I actually went:
My proposed final outcome is a hardcover book, containing my collection of sonder inspired street photography. It will also contain text excerpts and my final research essay about sonder, which I hope will further demystify and better convey my artistic philosophy to my audience.
From my reflection and feedback, I now plan on my book being split into day and night.
The middle black page will request the reader to flip the book over and repeat.
Sonder Days
- Day will be the front cover and first half.
Sonder Nights
- Night will be the back cover and second half.
I will complete all my editing in Adobe Lightroom Classic. This is my software of choice because of my experience with it and how streamlined the editing process is. I eventually decided on Bookwright for the book creation and designing process, as it is the proprietary software of Blurb.
From my reflection and feedback, I now plan on my book being split into day and night.
In my culling and editing process, I realised that my work was better split into day vs night, instead of cities. I am concerned that I will have less content for certain cities, and will subsequently have to now use images I prefer just to have a better balance,
I now aim to label each image with the city, and possible sequence cities together.
Google Calendar has helped me to block out my time and keep track of specific tasks, especially deadlines.
