The school social workers and school counselors from ACPS are collaborating to create, "News You Can Use, " a resource series including videos, fact sheets and SEL material. We will be covering a variety of content for parents, students and educators.

About Our Roles

School counselors are certified/licensed educators who help ALL students:

  • apply academic achievement strategies

  • manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills

  • plan for postsecondary options.

A typical day as a school counselor involves:

  • academic planning and goal setting

  • conducting classroom lessons

  • providing short-term counseling to students

  • giving referral for long-term support

  • collaborating with families/teachers/administrators/and community for student success

School counselors advocate for students, as well as analyze data to identify student issues, needs, and challenges.

School social workers are masters level professionals who are a vital part of the education system and act as a liaison between the home, school and community.

Focusing on removing barriers to student success and addressing the social, emotional, behavioral, and adaptive functioning needs of students and families.

School Social Workers:

    • Address attendance related concerns K-8

    • Identify students facing unstable housing

    • Complete social histories for special education eligibility

    • Provide resource referrals to community-based services

We work collaboratively with school personnel, parents and various community agencies to provide comprehensive support to our students and their families.
