Students will learn the basics of strength training and the fundamental techniques of major lifts. Students will work through a teacher guided program throughout the semester in terms of developing explosive and functional athletic strength/power. This class is not only for athletes but individuals wanting to better their physical self. By the end of the course, students will have a basic understanding of weight training and have the tools to develop their own workout program.

This course is intended for the highly motivated student. After completion of Advanced Physical Education I, students have the opportunity to further develop their weight room knowledge and skills. Students will work through a teacher guided program. However, students will have the opportunity to take ownership to develop their own workout program throughout the semester based on their prior knowledge, continued research, and goal setting. Students will check in with the teacher and meet about the workouts developed. Overall, this is a more self-guided weight room opportunity with teacher assistance.

Health & PE 9 is a course designed to cover fitness, cardio-vascular health, activities, substance abuse, personal health, nutrition, consumer/environmental health, family life education, safety/first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). This class is a graduation requirement for all students.

Health & PE 10 emphasizes aerobic fitness and aerobic team sports. This course includes the classroom portion of driver’s education. Regular attendance is important to earn the required number of hours in classroom driver’s education. Behind-the-wheel instruction is not part of the course but is available outside of school hours through private and commercial instructors. This class is a graduation requirement for all students.

Students will engage in a number of recreational games that go beyond team sports. These activities will prepare students with knowledge of games that can be played for a lifetime, beyond high school. Students will be exposed to and explore career opportunities within the field of recreation and sports that will coincide with the component of recreational games.

This course allows students to explore the many career opportunities in the fields of athletics, sports, and outdoor recreation. Career areas that students explore include athletic administration, coaching, umpiring/officiating, athletic field preparation/maintenance, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, sports recreation management, physical education, and many others. This course is very project based along with guest speakers and many hands on learning opportunities.

In this course, students earn a certification in First Aid/CPR/AED. The course introduces students to topics such as human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, biomechanics, medical terminology, injuries and illnesses, and legal and ethical issues in sports medicine. Students also examine prospective careers in the sports medicine field. Upon successful completion of this course, students are eligible to take Sports Medicine II .

This course builds upon basic knowledge acquired in Sports Medicine I on topics such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, exercise program design, and injury prevention, assessment, treatment, and management. Students prepare for a career in sports medicine, including completing an internship.

This course is for ninth graders interested in strength and conditioning. Class topics include the basics of weight room procedures and protocols and exposure to different types of lifts and workouts. This course does not replace the need to take Health/PE 9.
