Engagement/Participation 10% (first-final week) Writing is not a spectator sport! To earn full participation/engagement credit, students should not only show up for class meetings and conferences, but they must also
a. demonstrate that they have prepared well by completing the writing assignments and sharing those in class
b. actively contribute to the class discussions and workshops (making meaningful comments throughout the discussion, presenting interesting and related lines of questioning, and listening actively to others)
c. actively engage in group or individual activities
d. attend instructor conferences on time with prepared work for review and take notes for revision
This is an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge of writing. The more students put into the process, the more they will gain.
Quantitative Assessment:
Students will earn participation/engagement points every class period. These points may come from having assigned writing for workshops, answering questions on readings or other sources assigned, group activities, conferences, etc.
Quantitative Assessment (The instructor will make qualitative observations on student engagement in class):
A: Always attended class on time, participated actively in the discussion by answering questions, asking questions, and initiating conversations, and took an active role in discussions. The comments made were critical and insightful and furthered the discussion.
B: Usually attended class on time, usually participated in the discussion by answering or asking questions, and usually shared ideas in the discussions. The comments demonstrated understanding.
C: Sometimes attended class on time, occasionally participated in the discussion when prompted or addressed, and sometimes shared ideas in the discussions. The comments made demonstrated some understanding.
D/F: Rarely or never attended class on time. Did not regularly participate in classroom discussions. Little or no demonstration of understanding. Usually needs redirection for distractions in class (e.g., getting up, moving around, bathroom trips, phone use, chatting with peers)
