"AVID Excel is a branch of the AVID system that specifically focuses on our English Learners to help accelerate academic language acquisition. The AVID Excel course is taken in middle school and targets critical reading skills as well as academic vocabulary development. "

Are currently or are at risk of becoming long-term English language learners
Think of AVID Excel as a "booster" program for middle school students who are talented and motivated but are still working on mastering academic English.
While many students can speak English well with their friends, "academic English" is the more formal language used in textbooks, science labs, and college essays. AVID Excel is a special elective class (taken during the school day) designed to help students bridge that gap quickly so they can jump into honors and AP classes by the time they hit high school.
Why Should Your Student Join?
Middle school is a huge turning point. AVID Excel gives students a "home base" where they get extra support to reach their full potential. Here is why families love it:
The "Secret Code" of School
AVID Excel teaches the "hidden" skills that successful students use, such as:
Organization: How to keep a binder so nothing gets lost.
Focused Note-Taking: How to take notes that actually help you study for the test.
Time Management: How to balance homework, sports, and family.
Fast-Track to College
The program is designed to move students out of ML classes faster. It prepares them to enter the "regular" AVID program in high school, which has a proven track record of getting students into four-year universities.
A Built-in Support System
Your student won’t be alone. They will be part of a "cohort"—a group of peers who stay together and support one another. They also get:
College Tutors: Small group tutoring sessions twice a week during class.
Field Trips: Visits to college campuses so they can see themselves there in the future.
Confidence in Speaking
Many students know the answer but are afraid to raise their hand because they are worried about their English. AVID Excel uses "Scholar Groups" and fun activities to help students practice speaking with confidence in a safe, supportive environment.
Is it Right for My Student?
If your student is a hard worker, wants to go to college, and is still classified as an English Learner, AVID Excel is the perfect "launchpad" for them.
The Big Goal: We want to make sure your student’s language skills never hold back their big dreams.
