Small Groups

What are small counseling groups?

The goal of small group counseling is to assist students with developing awareness of interpersonal issues, to develop strategies and skills to positively impact their school achievement and to increase appropriate social interaction skills. They help students to connect with others who are experiencing similar struggles and can be helpful to address issues that are interfering with learning in the classroom.

Small groups can be useful in helping students learn skills such as:

  • making and keeping friends

  • controlling strong emotions

  • managing stress, worries, or grief

  • recognizing their strengths

Small counseling groups are 6-8 week planned activities outside of the classroom that promote academic, career or social/emotional development.
