Most of these apply to both classrooms but a few rules only apply to specific classes.
I don't allow food in my classes because
the mess that it creates- trash, bugs crumbs, stains, spills
food allergies and aversions
fingers touching materials that could be toxic then touching food
I do make exceptions to the rule:
1/2 days when students eat in classrooms
state testing
students with medical conditions documented with the nurse
This is a district and campus policy and I strongly believe in it. Students do not need their cellphone in my class for any reason. Students will be told once to put away and if not then it will be taken to student services. If it becomes a constant issue, the student may be asked to put phone in a designated area for the class period every day.
If a student needs to communicate with a parent they will need permission to go to student services where they can call or text.
If a student does not put their name on their work then I can not grade the work therefore it goes on the Abandoned Art board. If they leave art out and not put in the designated turn in location then it also goes to the board. Students have 1 week to claim while on the board. After that it will be put in a box for the remainder of that 9 weeks. After the 9 weeks, all work unclaimed will be thrown away.
Students are graded on their ability to follow the directions for the assignment, craftsmanship, effort and creativity. Assignments are designed to not be completed from start to finish in 10 minutes. Showing up to class does not guarantee an A.
Grading from the previous week is always done on Sundays.
Students are responsible for their grade. They are expected to know their grade and missing assignments or be able to find the information.
Late work is accepted only within that 3 weeks that it was assigned. I follow district policy about late work with every day it is late 10 pts are deducted. After the 5th day the grade will go no lower than a 50. Test grades lower than a 70 can be redone for at best a 70 and must be arranged by the student.
Students are responsible for anything they miss from class. If they miss enough days that can not make up a specific assignment or test they will be excused only after speaking with teacher.
Safety is a major concern in the art room. Students are expected to handle all materials as they are intended to be used.
Rulers are only used for measuring.
Scissors are not to be used for cutting anything but designated materials.
Materials are not to be thrown, broken, thrown away or taken out of the room without permission.
No running or horseplay
Students should be seated or in a designated area unless otherwise instructed.
Bags and personal belongings must be clear of pathways at all times
I don't give extra paper for 3 reasons:
Students need to be responsible for their paper and take care of it
The student doesn't learn from their mistake and make art if they keep starting over
If I gave paper every time a mistake was made then I would run out of supplies and it is a waste of paper
Instead, students can either bring their own paper, use recycled paper or notebook paper to finish the assignment. Points are taken off for not being the original but at least it is better than a zero.
Students can donate their supplies to the class collection or keep their own supplies. They are not required to share if they keep their own supplies but supplies must be labeled.
Teacher is not responsible for personal supplies left in the classroom.
All classroom supplies are expected to be used properly. Students who do not follow classroom rules may be subject to loss of supplies.
Students who take another person's art and claim as their own is subject to the following:
opportunity to redo assignment with points taken off
a zero given for the assignment
call to parents
1 to 3 hr detention
Students are required to take care of equipment and if they can not, they will not be allowed to use.
Chromebooks will not be slammed shut or drawn on. They are to be put in chromecart and plugged in
Cameras will be handled with care and checked to make sure all supplies are with them before and after use
No equipment is to be used without teacher permission
No horseplay of any kind when equipment is out
Students are required to keep the classroom clean. Students are given a 5 minute clean up period at the end of class so there is no rush at the end of class. If students are not using that time, they may be required to stay behind to clean their area then given a late pass.
To summarize
Listen when the teacher or a peer is talking
Take care of our supplies and classroom
Clean up after yourself
No non-water drinks in class
Participate in class and show effort during projects
Think before you act
Be kind to others
Please no snacks that will get on any materials or artworks (like Doritos, Takis, etc) If you really do need a snack, please ask first and eat it during bellwork. You will need to clean up before getting out anything. No eating during studio time, art talks, lessons, etc.
Please do not touch any materials without asking permission first. I will set out everything you need for class. There is never a reason for a student to be in the supply closet or kiln room.
