Accelerated Reader
I do encourage a great deal of independent reading for pleasure with my students. Developing a love of reading is so important to a child’s educational future, and I view reading for pleasure as a priority. We have a great selection of books, right in our own classroom! These books are of ALL reading levels, and available for students to borrow.
Accelerated Reader (AR)
AR is a way that teachers can monitor the amount of reading a child is doing, along with checking to make sure that each child is reading at their appropriate reading level.
AR books are differentiated to meet the needs of a variety of different skilled readers. This allows all students to become successful at their own reading level.
About every 3 months, students will take the Star Reader. The Star Reader assessment provides invaluable information for teachers about each child's reading abilities. It will also recommend a reading level range for students to be successful while progressing with their reading. The reading level range is color coded to make it easier for book selection. Please see picture above for each color's book range.
AR is a part of Attleboro Public School's curriculum as a means of tracking students' reading progress. This will continue into the middle school as it is part of their grading system.
AR is designed for a specific purpose: "AR assesses whether students have read books or selections of text, and indicates the extent to which they comprehend what they have read. It also tracks the amount of text read and comprehension scores over time, which can be used for goal-setting and progress monitoring purposes." - AR website
AR books can be found in our classroom library, your home and other libraries. Please keep in mind that books do not need to have a colored sticker on their binding to be an AR book. Almost all books have an AR quiz on them, even books in your own home library! Please click on the link below to check if a specific book has an AR quiz on it.
It is extremely important that all children are reading their 20 minutes each night. (see "Why Can't I Skip My 20 Minutes of Reading Tonight?" picture above)
