This design is meant to be an imitation of the London Bridge that involves CadFAB and electronics. To make the bridge open, it needs a trigger mechanism. The sensor in this case acts as the trigger. When the sensor detects an object (boat/ship) is approaching the bridge, it is triggered and then sends a message to make the bridge lift up to allow easy passage.
