The Ateneo de Manila University is one of the leading institutions of higher learning in the Philippines. It is a comprehensive university whose tertiary and academic graduate programs are housed in five schools: the School of Humanities, the School of Social Sciences, the School of Science and Engineering, the John Gokongwei School of Management, and the newly established School of Education and Learning Design.
Founded in 1859 by the Society of Jesus and still run by it, the Ateneo de Manila is a product of the Spanish formation of the Philippines. Its history demonstrates the ambivalences of intercultural contacts, especially where cultures are not coequal. The Ateneo de Manila served as a state apparatus on the one hand and nursed revolutionaries such as Jose Rizal despite itself on the other, often through its strong humanistic orientation. It is fitting, then, that through its School of Humanities, it hosts the conference series “Contacts and Continuities: 500 Years of Asian-Iberian Relations.”

CHAM — Centre for the Humanities is an inter-University research unit of the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and of the Universidade dos Açores, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.
From 2015 to 2023, CHAM’s strategic project is focused on “frontiers”. With a solid core on historical studies, this multi-disciplinary project considers frontiers as lines that separated, throughout history, a plurality of societies and cultures, but also as social and cultural constructs that promoted communication and interaction. This theme is organised around three structuring topics: the frontier as a spatial divide; the frontier as an intellectual boundary; and the frontier and the constructions of identities.

CHAM also hosts “Portugal – The Philippines: Connected Histories,” a cluster of academic and scientific projects and activities, involving the Ateneo de Manila University, the Embassy of the Philippines in Lisbon and other entities, aimed at promoting contacts and enhancing mutual knowledge between Portugal and the Philippines, namely through the recovery of common historical and cultural heritage.
