A Canvas course is a space that contains all the files, assignments, quizzes, discussions, modules, and announcements for a specific course or class. There are two ways of building a course: through a New Course Shell or Building a Sandbox Course.
A Canvas Sandbox is used as a test course when building a course. Faculty members are usually given one Sandbox. You cannot add people in your Sandbox.
A Course Shell is a blank course space where you may build and organize your class content. After building your course, it is published for your students to use.
Find your Course Shell
Access to the course shells will be made available to you as soon as the course offerings for the coming semester/term are finalized. The course shell will be named according to the assigned course that you will be teaching for the semester.
Your course shells should appear on your Dashboard.
Students are automatically enlisted to your course and will appear under People. If you are building your course before the start of the semester, the list will appear blank.
Once you have your course shell, it is time to build modules within your course shell. Modules are a way to organize and structure the class content in a sequential manner. It may be organized by week, unit, topic, or output.
