Welcome
Welcome to the home page of the Spanish Linguistics program at Arizona State University. Faculty and students in our program carry out cutting edge research in the areas of heritage language learning and teaching, second language learning and teaching, computer assisted language learning, sociolinguistics, bilingualism, sociophonetics, and usage-based linguistics.
Our faculty work as a unit. Research in the sociolinguistics of local varieties of Spanish informs the teaching of Spanish to heritage language learners. Research on usage-based theories of linguistic representation provides a psychologically plausible model to account for the bilingual linguistic system of Spanish heritage speakers.
In our learning context at Arizona State University, which has one of the top-ranked online undergraduate curricula in the nation, our faculty and students conduct research on this rapidly growing medium of instruction. Teaching assistants in our program gain valuable teaching experience in both in person and asynchronous online formats.
Students in our programs graduate as well-rounded linguists prepared to contribute in teaching Spanish to both second language and heritage language speakers, in online and in person formats, both within and outside of academia. We invite you to explore this site to learn about our programs, faculty, students, and alumni.
