iPOS

Overview

Watch this video to get an overview of the iPOS (Interactive Plan of Study) and how it will support you as you navigate your degree requirements. Please keep in mind that the iPOS functions as an agreement between you, your academic unit, and the Graduate College. If you were admitted to ASU in Fall 2022 or thereafter, you are required to submit your iPOS in your first semester. If you were admitted prior to Fall 2022, you are required to submit your iPOS by the end of your first year.

While we require you submit your initial iPOS for approval by the end of your first semester, we also understand that many of you are planning coursework multiple semesters or years in advance. That said, you are able to (and expected to) update your iPOS as you progress through your program. We want to ensure you have an initial plan for completing your degree that indeed satisfies your degree requirements, and as you make changes to that plan, we will verify your updated plan still satisfies your degree requirements. Failure to initially submit or update your iPOS can have serious ramifications on your ability to progress and complete your degree.

Completing Your iPOS

To access your iPOS, log onto your MyASU and look for your My Programs box on the bottom right-hand side of your home page. Click on your program > iPOS > Graduate Interactive Plan of Study (iPOS).

You will find instructions for submitting the iPOS in the Initial iPOS Guide for Doctoral Students, Initial iPOS Guide for Master's and Certificate Students, and in this iPOS video tutorial.

Updating Your iPOS

SOLS asks that you check and update your iPOS each semester. Please see the how-to guides below for assistance in making updates:

Adding Previously Completed/Transfer Coursework

ASU has several policies regarding transfer coursework and utilizing credits from previous degrees. These policies are described below.

Pre-Admission Credits

Credit hours completed at ASU or at another regionally accredited U.S. institution or international institution officially recognized by that country associated with a non-awarded graduate degree (i.e., did not finish the program or were a non-degree seeking student), before the semester and year of admission to an ASU graduate degree program, are considered pre-admission credits.  With the approval of the academic unit and the Graduate College office, students may include a maximum of 12 graduate-level credit hours with grades of “B” or better that were not used towards a previous degree. Preadmission credits must have been taken within three years of admission to the ASU degree or certificate program to be accepted.

Graduate Credits Earned by ASU Undergraduate Students

ASU students enrolled in an approved Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s degree program (commonly referred to as 4+1), may share ASU credit hours. Students must contact their ASU undergraduate advisor and graduate support staff to ensure proper sharing of credit hours. Bachelors/Master’s students may earn up to a maximum of 12 graduate credits during their undergraduate degree to be used later towards a master’s degree. An undergraduate degree and a graduate degree may not be awarded during the same term of enrollment. Students must apply, be admitted and registered as graduate students to earn a master’s or doctoral degree at ASU. Students that are not enrolled in an approved Bachelor’s/Master’s degree program are not eligible to utilize courses earned during the undergraduate degree program for a graduate degree.

Blanket Credits

PhD students may apply up to 30 credit hours, referred to as a blanket 30, of appropriate coursework from a previously awarded master’s degree toward their PhD plan of study with approval of their academic unit and the Graduate College. If a PhD student has an awarded master's degree and their official transcripts on file with ASU, they will have the option to select the number of blanket credit hours they'd like to use toward their plan of study in the "Previous Degree" section of the iPOS. You should consult with your major advisor prior and the Program Director for your graduate program before adding the blanket credit hours.

Blanket credit hours must then be added to your plan of study in the "Course Admin" section of the iPOS. Typically, you will add all 30 into your electives and research section. However, if you would like to add a previous course to replace a specific requirement of your degree program (i.e., a core course requirement), you should discuss this first with your major advisor and the Program Director for your graduate program. Once you have their approval, contact sols.grad@asu.edu for guidance on adjusting your iPOS.

NOTE: If you obtained a master's degree at ASU, you should see the option to add all of your MS courses to your PhD iPOS on the Course Admin page if you select to add your courses from your transcript. If you do this, multiple petitions will populate because the system will assume you are attempting to add coursework you are not eligible to add. If you did obtain a master's degree at ASU that you’d like to use toward your PhD, avoid this by using the blanket hours to add your credits instead of adding each specific course on the Course Admin page.

400-Level Courses

All SOLS graduate programs allow you to use up to 6 credit hours of 400-level coursework toward your degree if taken during enrollment in the graduate degree or if the credits meet pre-admission credit requirements. If you attempt to add more than 6 credits, a petition will populate in your iPOS, which is the system's way of telling you that you have added something that violates a Graduate College policy. Petitions of this nature will not be approved, so please do limit your 400-level coursework to 6 or fewer credit hours. You may take more than 6 credits of 400-level coursework if you'd like, but you may only add up to 6 in your iPOS. The additional credit hours will not be able to count toward your degree.

Courses below 400-level are not eligible to be used to count toward your degree. All other coursework must be 500-level work or higher.
