Extension Requests

For Fall 2026 CPT extension requests, students must send an email scai.grad.cpt@asu.edu with the following information, no later than December 12, 2026. The subject line should read "extension request". 

Your request must include:

• Original end date listed on the SCAI CPT application (not the CPT I-20)

• New end date

• Academic justification for the extension

Important!

• The new end date cannot be later than December 12,2026 for graduating students  and January 10, 2027 for continuing

• Students must have a valid academic justification for the extension. Extending CPT for reasons relating to pay or employer need are not acceptable.

• It is important to save the email approval from SCAI Advising in case questions arise in the future.

• All students approved for a CPT extension should check that the new end date falls within the end date listed on the I-20.

  • • Generally, non-thesis master's students need approval from SCAI Advising (scai.grad.cpt@asu.edu) only, and do not also need to email ISSC. 

    • Thesis/dissertation students will typically need an updated I-20 and should also email issc.employment@asu.edu with the proof of approval of the extension from SCAI Advising. Then ISSC will work to issue an updated I-20. It is important for students to receive the I-20 extension before proceeding to work beyond the original end date.
