Nature Connectedness
We are oftentimes exposed to nature without forming a connection. Nature connectedness describes each of our relationships to nature. It involves the emotional responses that nature creates in each of us. Nature can elicit feelings of calm, joy, awe, and wonder, as well as aid creativity and improve concentration. Increased nature connectedness is also associated with supporting positive mental health components such as reducing depression and anxiety levels and relieving stress.
The emotional connection to the environment benefits our emotional health and well-being, and this effect on pro-environmental behaviors comes from how we interact with what is around us and how we value it. Mindfulness (being in the moment) supports our connection with nature by keeping us present with the environment instead of thinking of life's challenges.
As our connection to nature strengthens, we see ourselves as part of nature, not a separate component, which is essential when confronted with today's environmental challenges. Mindful connections with nature allow us to understand the relationship between people and nature better. This understanding is necessary for effective decision-making and empowering individuals to take positive actions.
Connecting with nature, therefore, helps to provide the foundation for resilient, healthy ecosystems, communities, and economies to thrive and remain for generations to come.
