Example Lesson Plans
The Junior Recess Coach program empowers students to be creative and active participants in activity and game development and lesson planning. One school opted to have students develop the games that the older students would teach to the younger students. This approach allowed students to develop ownership of their roles, activate their imagination, exercise their individuality, and share their experiences with others. Another school opted to use a teach-reteach method where the physical educator taught students games they could use and the students replicated the games with their peers. Another form of lesson planning was information sharing. A third school opted to ask students to share information about leadership on the playground, appropriate play, and how to combat negative behavior scenarios by developing and leading a presentation.Â
All of these examples demonstrate the flexibility of the Junior Recess Coach program. Student involvement exists on a spectrum where students may be more or less involved depending on the needs of the school. This allows for adaptations to the program, and highlights the variety of opportunities for students to participate in increasing their own physical activity, positive social interactions, and appropriate behaviors during free-play times.
