University commencement is the university-wide celebration at which degrees are conferred upon graduating students by the president of Arizona State University. ALL graduating masters and doctoral students from every college within ASU are eligible to attend Commencement.  

What you need to know:

• Check-In - Graduates should plan to check in no later than 8 a.m. with commencement volunteers at the southeast entrance of Sun Devil Stadium.

• RSVP is required for graduating students - You will be prompted to do so after completing the 1st step (see Start Here - First Step). All college convocations, special interest convocation events and both University Commencement events require an RSVP for participation. Students should register their guests and themselves through MarchingOrder. For information about special interest convocation activities, please contact the University Ceremonies office. 

• Tickets for guests - NOT required for Graduate Commencement. 

• Academic regalia - Academic regalia (caps and gowns) are required for all graduation events. See additional information about regalia. 

• Clear bag policy - Graduation venues are enforcing the clear bag policy. No large purses, bags or backpacks will be allowed into the building by anyone. All items that would be carried in a bag must be carried in a clear bag. Click here for more information on the clear bag policy.

• Doctoral recognition - Graduates will be hooded by a faculty mentor and will have their names called before crossing the stage (see additional information about this below). 

• Master's recognition - Master degree candidates will be recognized as a group. Master degree candidates will not be individually hooded or cross the stage at University Graduate Commencement

• Programs - ASU provides graduates and their guests with a digital commencement program. Individual names are not listed in the program.

• Parking - There are multiple locations for you and your guests to park on the Tempe campus (see the following map for details).

PhD Students - Additional Information

Candidates, you will receive a reader card when you check in. Please carry your hood over your arm. It should not be worn before your degree is conferred. Please invite your PhD mentor to participate in the hooding ceremony. If your mentor cannot attend the ceremony, please invite an appropriate substitute from the ASU faculty. Your faculty mentor/hooder or substitute will be seated next to you. It is the responsibility of graduating doctoral candidates to submit the name of their mentor or hooder (the faculty member attending with you). For doctoral students, the link will appear after you have been advanced to Candidacy by the Graduate College, applied for graduation and paid your fees. If the name and contact information for your hooder is not submitted, a seat WILL NOT be reserved.
