Grey Box UNI Capstone

For my Capstone project, I worked with Grey Box (A Canadian nonprofit) on their UNI project. As an offline app that can provide access to tools like Wikipedia and other educational content, our team was tasked with implementing Moodle (an open source learning management software) onto it.  From Fall 2025 to Spring 2026 our team focused on configuring the  Android Development Enviornment to allow for the backend of a MariaDB server along with reconfiguring the root to allow access for Moodle to run.  The project is fairly complex due to legacy design of the backend involving tools like PHP and older dependencies. 

In addition, I developed by Barrett creative project alongside this to create a machine learning chatbot for technical support. Based of Rasa, this chatbot provides the user who is struggling to connect to the network support. It is built on Rasa and will implemented into the Android app later this semester.

The outcome of these two tasks is to provide Moodle functionality on the UNI app along with providing a debugging chatbot client that the user can use to troubleshoot their errors. 

Throughout the semester I worked on professional skills as well such as communication and time tracking. This connects back to my Joy of Living theme regarding educational access. 

This project relates to my GCSP theme of Joy of Living and goes back to the core of my focus on expanding educational access, as incorporating the Moodle LMS will allow rural communities to access educational courses and continue their learning. Its part of Joy of Living, because it focuses on promoting educational development in communities which has been my main focus within the theme. 

The value that this capstone brought to me was crucial. It taught skills for dealing with an extended project on the SCRUM timeline. Unlike a typical class project, these were very intense with significant amounts of logging, meeting, and debugging. It also forced me to think about planning a project out in a long term scope rather than only for a few weeks or a month. It also made me much better with communication skills, and scheduling/calendar filling since it was important to be in touch with my capstone sponsor and teammates.
