John Dewey's four impulses that he describes in his novel "The Society and the School" are what he sees children need to be active and engaged learners. John Dewey's ideal classroom is taught based in reality to give learners a more proactive educational experience, rather than the passively-engaged, stale, unchanging curriculum that has been taught for years and years. Acting on the impulses gives learners a sense of control in their education. It is important for children, and all learners, to have the four impulses rooted in the curriculum, so that they can experience true engagement in their education.
